Mass Media in Education
Mass Media Mass  media refers collectively to all media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience via mass communication. Mass media consist of two words: Mass means aggregation of people and Media means various mode of communication.Â
Importance of Mass  Media Mass Media provide information to the mass within a less time. It takes a wide coverage of information regarding anything that is happening in any co rn er of the world. It brings the entire world to the individual or to the classroom. Children spend hours together sitting in front of the television and can visualize, hear and acquire knowledge about the world. These media easily reach groups, allow repeated use, give more reality, influence attitudes, show cause and effect relationships and ultimately motivate the audience. It sends information to remote places and helps in distant learning.

Print as an instructional medium It is the principal medium in the mass education scheme. It is economical and it has been traditionally used for pedagogical purposes. Electronic media as an instructional medium Mass media education is now largely depend on electronic media. Which has the following advantages. The variety and novelty of electronic media can motivate learner, stimulate imagination, create and sustain interest. They reduce the burden of teachers. They can cater to the individual needs. It helps in involving the learner in the teaching learning process and keep the concentration.

ETV (Educational television) Educational Television (ETV) is a system that presents learning content in various subjects produced by an agency. It is a means of providing direct instruction (formal) as well as continuing education (non-formal).
ETV CHARACTERISTICS ETV combines both sensory and auditory experience. It is an extension of radio broadcasting. It offers uniformity of communication. It is a versatile educational vehicle. It stimulates and reinforces ideas. It provides live broadcasts of ‘on the spot‘ events. It provides a powerful visual medium. It is a means for leisure time activities.

MERITS OF ETV Â It permits the use of the best available teacher to teach a subject to a large number of student viewers. It preserves the expert teaching skills on video tape or film for later use. It provides a common experience to all students when they all see the same basic ideas or techniques on television. It provides technical advantages not readily available in normal classrooms for illustration or demonstration. It makes quick and lasting visual impressions. It saves time, effort and cost of setting classroom projection equipment. It brings live demonstration. It permits inclusion of up-to-date information. It directs the attention of the student to the exact detail of object which he should see by eliminating distracting surroundings.
LIMITATIONS OF ETV AS AN EDUCATIONAL MEDIUM Television is one way communication meduim.it does not involve face to face interaction. Programing is not controlled by teachers. Viewers are forced to accept the pace of the program.  Initial acquisition and maintenance can be costly. Telecasting time/Adjustments with school timetable. Delayed feedback.
RADIO Â Radio is a scientific device that functions as an effective auditory instrument for communication. Radio technology was first developed during the late nineteenth century and came into popularity as an educational medium during the early 20 th century. Illiterate people can also use it. Radio to be more cost-effective and capable of exerting greater learning effects than textbooks or teacher education. Radio broadcasts talks on a variety of topics such as impact of science on human life, health and hygiene, matters concerning agriculture and literacy programmes, in short any topic concerning our daily life and its betterment.
Educational programmes are broadcast on specific days at specific hours. Programmes meant for students are based on the prescribed syllabi and sequenced to synchronise with the class lessons. Programmes are arranged separately for primary, secondary, college and university students. Some programmes are meant for updating the knowledge of working teachers. Booklets describing the details of educational programmes for the year are prepared by All India Radio and made available to educational institutions at the beginning of each academic year. The programme inspires the students to gain global knowledge and to inculcate in the good attitude and sense of appreciation. Broadcasting of biographies of great men of epoch-making events and development of science and technology will arouse interest and curiosity in pupil which in turn motivate them to acquire more knowledge. The variety in topics will satisfy the varied interest of children. Broadcasts of dramas, stories, poems and music help to develop and refine desirable emotions in them. Production of radio programmes require expertise. The educational programmes on the radio may not be available during school time. Limitations
NEWSPAPER The function of a newspaper is to make available to the public the news as far as possible without any bias and without distortion. Information dissemination is the chief function of the newspaper. They are primary mass medium from which people receive news. They are affordable and thus sustainable. Newspaper today have the added responsibility of providing instruction. A newspaper fulfils this function of instruction through its enlightening comments and special features. Thozilveedhi and Thozhilvartha , padippura and vidhya pages etc play a very important role in education.
ADVANTAGES OF NEWSPAPER Easily available. Not very expensive. Anyone can publish advertisements or other useful information easily in any size form at or any page of newspaper. Can read news anytime, anywhere and able to read information again and again. Available in various languages. Light weight, easy to carry. Almost all the latest news are covered. Increase vocabulary and general knowledge. Can be kept for future references. Weather reports, sports events, business news, educational news, local news as well as world news are available. Entertaining things like puzzles, stories, and crosswords are also available. Newspapers are ecofriendly and easy to recycle.
Cinema or film, a form of Mass Media has become a powerful tool since the day it was introduced to the world. Film Communication is a process of transferring informations through visual receptors. It may be used for the communication of ideas, attitudes and experiences to the masses of people. It is very effective in adult education. FILM An educational film has been described as the greatest teacher because it teaches not only through the brain but through the whole body. It has a very powerful influence on the minds of children and in shaping their personality. The whole universe can be brought to the classroom through films and very abstract ideas made concrete and meaningful to pupils.
A journal is a scholarly article containing articles written by researchers, professors and other experts. Journals focus on a specific discipline or field of study Journal articles are the final output of most research, and a researcher‘s performance and productivity are judged largely on the number of publications as well as where they appears. The importance of journals in academic life goes beyond providing a means of communication and a permanent record. Journals are published on a regular basis [monthly, quarterly etc.] and are sequentially numbered. Journals are also known as periodicals or serials. Most of the articles in a journal are peer reviewed, have original research, focus on current developments, cite other works and have bibliographies, can be in print, online or both. JOURNALS
 The educational journals are important in making teachers and students aware about the new trends, discoveries, inventions and updated knowledge about the subjects. Journals suggests new methods of teaching that is adaptable to new generation of students. Journals are helpful in facilitating better learning to students. The Internet carries an extensive range of information, resources and services. INTERNET
The advantages of computers in education include an efficient storage and performance of information, quick information processing and very importantly the saving of paper. Students find it easier to refer to the Internet than searching for information in fat reference books. It is easier to store information on computers than maintaining hand-written notes.
Online education has revolutionized the education industry. The computer technology has made the dream of distance learning, a reality. Physically distant locations have come close to each other only due to computer networking. Computers facilitate an efficient storage and effective presentation of information. Presentation software like PowerPoint and animation software like Flash and others can be of great help to the teachers while delivering information.
Computers facilitate an audio-visual representation of information, thus making the process of learning interactive and interesting. Internet can play an important role in education. It facilitates anytime anywhere information is made available . As it is a huge information base, it can be harnessed for the retrieval of information on a wide variety of subjects. The Internet can be used to refer to information on various subjects to be taught to the students. Electronically erasable memory devices can be used repeatedly. They offer a robust storage of data and reliable data retrieval.
Social media are becoming the most important tools for interaction among people, where everybody can share, exchange, comment, discuss and create information and knowledge in a collaborative way.
