FRACTION
a fraction is a way of representing a part of a
whole or a ratio between two quantities.
Example:
In a Pizza Pie: If you have 1 out of
10 slices → 1/10.
Numerator → number of parts taken
Denominator → total equal parts
Parts of Fraction:
1
__
2
DECIMAL
decimal is another way of writing fractions, especially those
with denominators like 10, 100, 1000, etc.
Example:
0.5 =
Tenths (0.1), Hundredths (0.01), Thousandths (0.001)
Place values:5
__
10
= 1
__
2
FRACTIONS TO DECIMALS
a fraction to a decimal means dividing the numerator (top
number) by the denominator (bottom number).
Examples:
11
__
2
= 1÷2 =
23
__
4
= 3÷4 =
0.5
0.75
DECIMALS TO FRACTIONS
a decimal to a fraction means writing the decimal number as a
fraction with denominator 10, 100, 1000.
Example:
15
__
10 = 0.5 1

COMPARING FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS
To compare fractions and decimals, we need to change both into
the same form (either both as decimals, or both as fractions).
If both are decimals → compare directly.
If both are fractions → compare by finding common denominators.
Example 1: Compare 1/2 and 0.6
Change 1/2 into decimal 1
__
2 = 0.5 Compare: 0.5 < 0.61
__
2 < 0.6
REAL-LIFE APPLICATIONS
1. Money and Shopping
Prices often use decimals: e.g., $2.50, $9.99
Discounts use fractions: “Half price” = 1/2
Example: A $20 shirt with 25% discount → fraction 1/4 → pay
$15.
Fractions and decimals are used in:
2. Cooking and Recipes
Ingredients are in fractions: ½ cup of sugar, ¾ teaspoon of
salt.
You may need to convert them to decimals when adjusting
recipes.
Example: 0.25 liters of milk = 1/4 liter
PRACTICE AND WRAP-UP
Convert 2/5 to decimal.
Convert 0.4 to fraction.
Compare: Which is larger, 0.75 or 7/10?
You drank 0.5 liter of water. Write it as a fraction.
Practice Problems:
Why is it important to learn both fractions and decimals?
