MATERIALS HANDLING . INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS MATERIALS HANDLING?? R efers to  the processes of moving, storing, protecting, and controlling materials and goods within a facility or across a supply chain. It involves a range of activities like loading, unloading, transportation, inventory management, and order fulfillment.  Effective material handling is crucial for optimizing efficiency, reducing costs, and streamlining operations in various industries, including manufacturing, warehousing, and logistics.

CONT…. Material handling is the movement of materials and goods from one location to another. It includes protecting, storing, and controlling the materials, from manufacturing to distribution.

CONT…. Key Aspects of Material Handling: Movement: Material handling involves the physical transfer of goods from one location to another, whether within a warehouse or between different points in the supply chain.  Storage: It includes the process of storing materials securely and efficiently to prevent damage or loss.  Protection: Material handling ensures that materials are protected during movement and storage to maintain their quality and integrity.

CONT… Control: It involves managing the flow of materials, ensuring that the right quantity of materials is available at the right time and place.

CONT…. Examples of Material Handling Activities: Loading and unloading trucks or railcars Storing goods on pallets or shelves Using forklifts or conveyors to move materials Managing inventory in a warehouse Packaging and labeling products Fulfilling customer orders

TYPES OF MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENTS SYSTEM & EQUIPMENTS Material handling systems are classified into four main categories:  bulk material handling, engineered systems, industrial trucks, and storage and handling equipment.  These systems are essential for moving and storing goods in warehouses and other facilities, and they can be manual, semi-automated, or automated

CONT…. 1. Bulk Material Handling system Focuses on equipment designed to handle loose or unpackaged materials such as grains, powders, and liquids. Examples:  Conveyor belts, bucket elevators, silos. Industries:  Agriculture, food processing, manufacturing 2. Engineered Systems Engineered or automated systems are solutions that incorporate technology supported by computers and robots to store and transport goods  An automated system is generally made out of several units, controlled by a management software application.

CONT… 3. Industrial Trucks Encompasses a range of vehicles, from small, hand-operated tools to large, motorized vehicles. Examples:  Forklifts, pallet trucks, tractors. Use:  Transporting materials within a facility.

CONT… 4. Storage and Handling system Storage and handling equipment secures your goods while they aren’t being used or waiting for the next stage in the supply chain process.  Storage and handling equipment can keep materials for short or long periods of time, depending on your warehouse’s needs

CONT… Storage and handling equipment includes:  Pallet racks:  Vertical structures made of steel framing with connectors and beams to store products  Shelves, bins and drawers:  Shelves, drawers and bins within shelving units store smaller materials.  Mezzanines:  Wooden, steel or fiberglass raised platforms that create additional storage  Stacking frames:  Equipment that stores and stacks numerous pallets and racks

PRINCIPLES OF MATERIALS HANDLING The effective design and operation of materials handling systems are guided by certain key principles. These principles aim to improve efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. They include: 1. Planning Principle Materials handling should be carefully planned for each specific operation to optimize flow and reduce delays 2 . Space Utilization Proper utilization of available space should be prioritized to facilitate smooth movement and storage of materials

CONT… 3. Time Principle Minimize handling time to increase productivity and reduce delays in production or distribution. 4 . Normal Flow Materials should move in a smooth, uninterrupted flow, 5 . Safety Ensure safety of personnel and materials by designing handling systems that minimize risks and hazards. 6 . Material Handling Equipment Choose appropriate equipment that matches the materials' nature, volume, and handling requirements .

IMPORTANCE OF MATERIALS HANDLING 1. Prevents Workplace Accidents  2 . Improves Employee Satisfaction  3 . Increases Productivity and Efficiency 4.Enhances Space Utilization Reduces Cost Improves Product Quality

OBJECTIVES OF MATERIALS HANDLING DISCUSS WITH YOUR COLLEGUES

PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT Discuss the factors affect the selection of materials handling equipment How can poor material handling affect productivity and safety? What are the types of material handling equipment?
