Materials Used in Contemporary Art
Contemporary artists feel free to experiment with materials and use explore possibilities. What would you do with old textile, used plastic bottles, buri or abaca? How can indigenous materials, found objects, recycled materials be combined to make an artwork? Can you use the computer to plan an art space before installing artwork? These are questions that artists grapple with in choosing or planning the material to use for their artworks.
Indigenous materials
Abaca
Recycled materials
Contemporary artists salvage materials that can be recycled and made into creative forms. They can make artworks that combine structure and wood and interact with the wind to make music. An example is Chime Halo, the hanging bamboo chimes that create sound when blown by the wind done by Cavite-born artist Impy Pilapil . Los Baños , Laguna artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan's Project Belonging gathered used objects, clothes, personal accessories, and many other things and compress them into cube-shapes.

These represent the boxes sent by Overseas Filipino Workers to their family left behind. Moving abroad, the couple artists collected hundreds of rubber slippers used by inmates in Singapore Changi prison and made these into artwork in the form of wings that stand on metal support. To see the artworks, log on to http:// drawingroomgallery.com/artist/alfredo-isabel-aquilizan-2/) They combine various found objects to create a metaphor of everyday human life and depict issues of identity, journey, migration and displacement.

Some artists combine indigenous materials with textile and mount these on a painted flat surface. Paper as an art medium is also explored by artists, like Mona Alcudia of Cebu who makes solid forms as well as transparent artworks using paper. In outdoor sculpture, there is a lot of use of brass welded together and mounted on concrete. Wood and glass are used for indoor sculpture. Found objects are combined and are covered with resin.

Painting is no longer confined to canvas hung on the wall. They can also be found on ceilings and floors. Some are done outdoors, like the Singapore ArtBridge (See artwork, log on to http ://www.singaporeartbridge.com/) which was painted by Batanes -born artist Pacita Abad with 2,350 multiple colors. Many local artists lead the community or students in painting murals on walls to make a more pleasant environment and to raise consciousness towards environmental protection.

In architecture, there is extensive use of glass and steel. Color combination is either complementary or strong contrasting, such as orange and blue, red and white.

Over years, there have been a lot of building construction, such as malls, convention centers, business process centers, industrial parks, and government service buildings.
All these demand art and contemporary artists are producing a huge body of works not only for indoor use but for outdoor, as well. In performance art, artists use variety of props such as rope, plastic, textile, and found objects. Paint is also used for body art.
An example is Cagayan de Oro artist Nicolas Aca (See artworks on p. 184) who paints his body to project an effect.
Technology has also redefined art in many ways. Some examples are: (a) light structures and floor drawings using colored laser beams and smoke;
(b) tubes hanging on the ceiling that respond to the viewer's movements, sound and touch;
(c) a wall- climbing robot holding a paint; and (d) a pen controlled by a software program to create certain patterns.
Because of the usefulness of new materials to art-making, artists have to upgrade their skills and learn the use of computer programs and its applications. Welding is also useful for fabrication and building structure. This requires physical strength and special tools.

Some materials have chemical components that are hazardous to the health such as acid, resin, and fiberglass. The availability and variety of materials and the possibilities offered by technology expand the choices of artists. This is essential to the development of contemporary art.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
1. Identify the materials used in contemporary art. 2 . Describe how technology has redefined art . 3. Make an artwork using selected materials creatively. 4 . Explain the process of making one's artwork
APPLICATION OF MAJOR CONCEPTS 1. In contemporary art-making, the artists enjoy a variety of materials such a 2 . The artist has to master the use of his/her chosen material because 3. Technology has changed the way art-making is done in contemporary art
INDEPENDENT WORK A. Search the Internet for artworks by Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan , Pacita Abad, or Impy Pilapil . Choose one artwork that you like. Study the materials that the artist used for the artworks. Note how he/she put together the materials to form an art piece.
Then answer the following questions: Describe the artwork. What is the subject matter of the artwork? What materials are used in the artwork? What are the dominant colors? How do the size of the repeated elements vary? How is texture used? Is it beautiful? Why do you think so? B. Now, make your own contemporary art using one type of material.
Follow the instructions below: 1. Choose one type of material and gather different types and forms of the material. For example, if you want shells, there should be different kinds, sizes, color, and shapes of shells. If you choose dried leaves, there should be a variety of leaves. Cut bamboo sticks are also good to use if they are available.
2. Have the following materials ready: 1/2 illustration board water brush clear vanish glue. 3. Procedure: Materials used in Contemporary Art • Use either the white or the black side of the illustration board. Using a pencil, plan the composition or arrangement of your objects or materials. Do you want these to form a triangle in the middle, perhaps put the similar colored items on one side, or maybe form an S form across the board? Put the objects on the desired places and see how they relate to each other.
Is there a focal point? Do the smaller pieces surround the focal point? What do you put in the background? Do the colors complement each other? Is there variety, at the same time unity of forms? When you are pleased with the arrangement of objects on your board, you are ready to mount them.
Pour some glue on a container and mix it with water, just enough to reduce the thickness of the glue. Using a brush, put glue on the board and affix the objects on their assigned space. When all of the objects are in place, put one more layer of glue over the entire board, now with objects mounted on it. You can use the brush to do this. • Leave your artwork to dry. When dry, you can cover it with a layer of clear varnish to make it a bit shiny.
The yearly celebration of Arts Month in February brings together artists from different regions who exhibit their artworks or combine their talents in public performances. Here, we witness a variety of skills, art techniques and art production, such as installation of birds and animals made from leaves and twigs, ropes and strings meshed in a form; body art performance; digital presentation; music performance amidst paintings and many others.

The Skills and techniques and preproduction of contemporary art
There are different types of techniques that artists can choose from: Collage is made by adhering flat elements such as newspaper or magazine cut-outs, printed text, illustrations, photographs, cloth, string, etc. to a flat surface to create a thick layer that is almost like a relief
Collage
Decalcomania is the process of applying gouache to paper or glass then transferring a reversal of that image onto canvas or other flat materials.
Decoupage is done by adhering cut-outs of paper and then coating these with one or more coats or transparent coating of varnish.
Frottage i s the technique of rubbing with crayon on a piece of paper which has been placed over an object or an image.
The impression of the image can be created using leaves, wood, wire screen, or metal with embossed image or words.
Montage is used for photography or film where a pictorial image is juxtaposed or placed overlapping to make another picture or design.
Trapunto painting is the technique used by Pacita Abad where her canvases are padded, sewn, and often filled with sequins, beads, shells, buttons, tiny mirrors, bits of glass, rickrack, swatches of precious textiles, and other things that she picks up from her travels and journeys.

Digital applications for art viewing is another technique. An example was made possible by the Samsung Supports the Arts FACETS based at Yuchengco Museum.
Many contemporary artists do not have formal studies in the fine arts but are self-taught.
Concerned with the development of their talent and skills in art-making, they study on their own, interact with artists and read a lot about lives of artists and their artworks. They also explore the materials in hardware stores, experiment with chemical reactions on their base material.
There are those who learn welding and simple engineering skills. Some hire resin makers, house painters and materials fabricators to help them in constructing their artworks.
An example is Ohm David's Installation art where he used metal and nylon strings and projected a spotlight onto the figure.
It comes with augmented reality technology (which is available from the downloading station at the museum)
.It transforms Filipino digital artworks.into immersive experiences. It is also (an) interactive and curated guide to the Filipino masters, giving you more information about select pieces from the museum collection and the artists behind them. (http://yuchengcomuseum.org/facets-app/) Mixing different materials is popular among contemporary artists.
Texture is a fascinating thing and can go beautifully with painting, as seen in Iloilo artist Ed Defensor's In The Wind (See p. 17 and the artwork online at http://www.eddefensor.com/ARTTOGO2. html). Bacolod artist Anita Feria collects ceramics pieces and arranges them in an artistic way on a flat background (See p. 13) In art production, an artist can work alone or interact with fellow artists.
