Activity 1: What do you think? Figure 1 Effects of Application of Bio-fertilizer on Plant Growth

Activity 1: What do you think? Figure 1 1. What do you think are the variables shown in the figure? 2. How does this picture relates to making an assumption?

HYPOTHESIS TESTING

Define and illustrate the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis Formulate the appropriate null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis on a population mean By the end of this lesson... 1 3 8 4 9 7 5 6 2

Hypothesis testing is a statistical method applied in making decisions using experimental data. It is basically testing an assumption that we make about population.

1 3 6 8 4 9 7 5 2 -is an initial claim based on previous analyses, which the researcher tries to disprove, reject, or nullify. It shows no significant difference between two parameters. It is denoted by . (symbol: =)   -is contrary to the null hypothesis, which shows that observations are the result of a real effect. It is denoted by . (symbol: , <, > )   Types of Hypothesis Testing Null Hypothesis Alternative Hypothesis

Examples The school claims that the mean score in Math of the incoming Grade 11 students is 81. The teacher wishes to find out if the claim is true. She tests if there is a significant difference between the batch mean score and the mean score of students in her class.

Examples Solution: Let be the population mean score and be the mean score of students in her class. : The mean score of the incoming Grade 11 students is 81 or =81. : The mean score of the incoming Grade 11 students is not 81 or 81.

Activity 2: Let’s Practice! Direction: Formulate a null and the alternative hypothesis of the following statements. 1. A medical trial is conducted to test whether or not a new medicine reduces uric acid by 50%. :________________________________________________________ :________________________________________________________ 2. We want to test whether the general average of students in Math is different from 80%. :________________________________________________________ :________________________________________________________ 3. We want to test whether the mean height of Grade 8 students is 58 inches. :________________________________________________________ :________________________________________________________

Activity 2: Let’s Practice! Answer Key. : The new medicine can reduce uric acid. : The new medicine cannot reduce uric acid. 2. : The general average of students in Math is equal to 80%. : The general average of students in Math is different from 80%. 3. : The mean height of students is 58 inches. : The mean height of students is not (less than or higher than) 58 inches.

Activity 3: Keep Me Connected! Direction: Analyze the situation below and formulate the null and alternative hypothesis.   According to a survey, the average daily usage of social media worldwide of global internet users amounts to 142 minutes per day. Sofia conducts her own survey among her friends to find out if their time spent on social media is significantly higher than the global survey.

Examples Solution: Let be the population mean score and be the mean score of students in her class. : The mean score of the incoming Grade 11 students is 81 or =81. : The mean score of the incoming Grade 11 students is not 81 or 81.

(symbol: = )   Hypothesis Testing Null Hypothesis Types of Hypothesis Testing Alternative Hypothesis -It is denoted by . (symbol: , <, > )

Activity 4: Formulate Me! Direction: Formulate the null and hypothesis testing of the following statements: 1. We want to test if LIPHS students take more than four years to graduate from high school, on the average. 2. We want to test if it takes less than 60 minutes to answer the quarterly test in Calculus. 3. The enrolment in high school this school year increases by 10%. 4. The intelligence quotient of male grade 11 students is the same as the female students. 5. The school librarian wants to find out if there was an increase in the number of students accessing the school library.

You did great. See you next time!
