MATHEMATICS GRADE 6

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to; 1. Define multiplication. 2. Solve 3-4 digit by 1-2 digit multiplication. 3. Solve problems in society by step by step procedure.

Multiplication is one of the four elementary mathematical operations of arithmetic, with the others being addition, subtraction and division. The multiplication of whole numbers may be thought as a repeated addition; that is, the multiplication of two numbers is equivalent to adding as many copies of one of them, the multiplicand, as the value of the other one, the multiplier.

For example 4 multiplied by 3 (often written as and spoken as "3 times 4") can be calculated by adding 3 copies of 4 together: 3 x 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 Here 3 and 4 are the factors and 12 is the product.

One of the main properties of multiplication is the commutative property: A dding 3 copies of 4 gives the same result as adding 4 copies of 3: 4 x 3 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 Thus the designation of multiplier and multiplicand does not affect the product.

ACTIVITY: 1. Mildred went to the store 39 times last month. She buys 5 crayons each time she goes to the store. How many crayons did Mildred buy last month? Answer: 5 crayons * 39 trips = 195 crayons

2. There are 98 pencils in each box. How many pencils are in 3 boxes? Answer: 98 pencils * 3 boxes = 294 pencils

3. Brenda went to the store 30 times last month. She buys 4 cards each time she goes to the store. How many cards did Brenda buy last month? Answer: 4 cards * 30 trips = 120 cards

4. Each card costs Php 3.00. How much do 44 cards cost? Answer: Php 3.00 * 44 cards = Php 132.00

5. There are 7 oranges in each box. How many oranges are in 68 boxes? Answer: 7 oranges * 68 boxes = 476 oranges

ACTIVITY:

ASSIGNMENT: 1.Mr. Connor makes $23 per hour repairing cars at the auto shop. If he works 46 hours this week, how much money will he make in one week? 2.Cody and Brad bought pizza for the class party. Cody bought 12 pizzas for $15 each. Brad bought 8 pizzas for $12 each. Who spent more money on pizza? 3.Jodie had a summer job as a veterinarian. She worked a total of 326 hours and made $13 per hour. How much money did Jodie make over the summer? 4.Angel is making a blanket that will be 28 inches x 42 inches. What will be the area of the blanket. 5.Farmer Tyler planted 638 corn stocks in a field. If each corn stock produces 6 ears of corn, how many ears of corn will he have?
