Objectives At the end of the lesson, I will be able to: To define and illustrate a coordinate plane To plots on the coordinate plane To determine the quadrants of the given points
RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM Prepared by: Ma. Rica Mae M. Rosete
Activity: Identifying the Location Suppose the books in the shelf are arranged in the following manner. 1. By writing (row number, column number) how will you describe the location of the following; Math textbook, Magazines 2. Using ordered pairs in form (row number, column number), how will you locate the others books’ position on the shelf?
Rectangular Coordinate Plane It is also known as xy plane or Cartesian Plane in honor of the French Mathematician Rene Descartes (1596-1650), who is known as the “Father of Modern Mathematics”.
Rectangular Coordinate Plane It is composed of two perpendicular number lines that meet at the point of origin (0,0) and divide the plane into four regions called quadrants . Origin: (0, 0)
Rectangular Coordinate Plane The horizontal number line is called the 𝒙 − 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔. The vertical number line is called the 𝒚 − 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔.
Rectangular Coordinate Plane It is composed of infinitely many points. Each point in the coordinate system is defined by an ordered pair of form ( x,y ). A
Rectangular Coordinate Plane The first coordinate of a point is called the x- coordinate or the abscissa . The second coordinate of a point is called the y- coordinate or the ordinate . A (-4, 4)
Example : Use the Cartesian plane in Figure 3 to plot the coordinates of the following ordered pairs. GIVEN Coordinates Quadrant M A T H M A T H (0, 4) y-axis (4, 5) I (-4, 2) II (1, -4) IV Figure 3
Activity : Objects ’ Positions Describe the location of each point by completing the table. An example is done for you Objects Coordinates Quadrant Ball (4, 2) I Spoon Television set Laptop Bag Pillow Camera Table (6, -5) IV (-5, 6) II (2, -4) IV (-4, -3) III (1, 5) I (0, 0) origin (-2, 2) II
Assignment : Let’s Plot the Points
