MATTER IN GASEOUS FORM
Gases have molecules that are so far apart that they move quickly in all directions. The force of attraction between them is relatively weak to hold them close.
Characteristics of Gases The following are the characteristics of gaseous materials.
1. Gases do not have a definite shape or volume. Air is present in the atmosphere and in any open space. Air, however, can be stopped by the solid walls of its container. The particles in the air spread out to fill the container. This can be demonstrated by blowing air into an inflated balloon. Then, you will see that the balloon expands. It is because the air fills the space in the balloon. This proves that the shape and the space that gases occupy are determined by their container.
2. Gases cannot be seen. You will only know that any gas is present because you can feel and inhale it. Air is colorless and tasteless. Smoke is a gaseous material that is visible due to very small particles it contains. Different kinds of smoke contain different particles depending on what is burning.
The following are the different properties of gaseous objects.
1. Gas can be compressed. Air in a container can be compressed or squeezed. This is because the particles of air are so far apart.
2. Gas diffuses. If gas gets out of its container, it will spread in all directions. For example, when you spray perfume, you can smell its scent. It is because the molecules of the perfume spread out and fill the room, enabling everyone inside the room to smell it
