Tactics & Techniques Business Analyst Skills Business Analyst Skills and Techniques

- Requirements Elicitation Identify the needs, risks, assumptions and expectations of the business. ● aka “Requirements Gathering” helps us understand what problems we’ll need to solve ●   Asking the right questions ●   Discovery sessions with stakeholders & SME’s ●   Understand the scope & prep the stakeholders ● Can be challenging to extract

- Requirements Traceability An approach to ensure that the solution complies with the requirements that were captured. ● Managed through documentation/template, a requirements traceability matrix (RTM) ●   Demonstrates the relationship between requirements and other artifacts ●   Supports as an aid scope management

- Personas A “persona” represents a group of users that can be based on roles, responsibilities, work streams, and or needs. ● Identifying helps with designing solutions to deliver functionality that is most relevant to this audience Where do we use this? ● User stories ●   User acceptance testing (UAT)

- User Stories The goal of a user story is to provide a general understanding of what a user needs/wants to do in the system and why. They do not provide the entire requirement. As a < who >, I want < what > so that < why >. As a service agent , I want to prioritize cases that are received via the web so that I can respond accordingly within the SLA.

- Acceptance Criteria & DoD Acceptance criteria are conditions that satisfy the user story in order for it to be accepted by the end user or business. ● Acceptance criteria explains the “what” has to be done to meet the requirement. ●   Acceptance criteria should be testable. Definition of Done (DoD) is an agreement between parties that the deliverable is met from a technical perspective. ● DoD - checklist or a set of guidelines stating what needs to be completed in order to call it “done”.

- User Acceptance Testing (UAT) BA Leads &/or supports this phase. ● ● Plans & supports the execution of UAT Final phase before Go-live ○ Go or No-go ●   Creates testing scenarios (acceptance criteria) ●   Monitors and analyzes testing feedback ● Works with stakeholders to prioritize defects
