Note-taking It is the act or process of writing down information.

NOTE-TAKING WHILE LISTENING NOTE-TAKING WHILE READING You cannot pause the lecturer, speech, or discussion to go over information you have not fully understood. It is easy to stop and reread something if needed. When you need to look up information, you have to make a note and look it up later on. When you need to look up information, you can do so right away. You cannot pause or stop the lecturer, speech, or discussion if you fall behind on taking down notes. You can read and take down notes at your own pace.

Various Methods for Note-Taking Outlining This involves illustrating the framework or the development of ideas in the text. This method is great for organizing ideas but is not recommendable if the lecture or listening text is too fast.

Outlining Nonverbal Communication in Oral Presentations Facial Expressions Smile. Appear relaxed and friendly. Posture Practice good posture. Don’t lean on a desk or wall. Don’t sit unless it is part of the presentation.

Mapping This involves creating a graphic representation of the content of a lecture, discussion, speech, or other texts. This makes it easy to illustrate the relationship between ideas. Various Methods for Note-Taking

Mapping Pricing Business strategies of the canteen stalls Product Promotion Product Innovation Customer relations

Charting This involves classifying information and noting them down in several columns. This would be helpful when the lecture format and ideas discussed can be classified into several categories. Once you have made the table and written the headings, note down information under each category. Various Methods for Note-Taking

Charting Non-probability Sampling Probability Sampling Quota Purposive Convenience Snowball Simple random Stratified random Systematic Clustered

Sentence Method This involves writing every new thought, fact, or detail on a separate line. This would allow you to write much information down, but the connection or relationship between ideas will not be readily apparent. Various Methods for Note-Taking

Be an active listener. Be selective in noting down information. Be as specific and as concrete as possible. Be attentive to the speaker’s nonverbal cues. Avoid distractions. Tips in Note-Taking

Criteria Below expectations 1 Needs improvement 2 Meets expectations 3 Exceeds expectations 4 Content (50%) Key ideas from the material Shows very little to no understanding of the text’s key ideas. Shows some misunderstanding of one or two of the text’s key ideas. Shows an understanding of the text’s key ideas. Shows excellent understanding of the text’s key ideas. Organization (25%) Knowledge of the relationships among ideas Fails to use any appropriate ideas or appropriate connections. Identifies important ideas but makes some incorrect connections. Identifies all the important ideas and shows an understanding of the relationships among them. Successfully identifies all important ideas and shows a deep understanding of the relationships among them.

Criteria Below expectations 1 Needs improvement 2 Meets expectations 3 Exceeds expectations 4 Strategy (25%) Ability to choose an appropriate note-taking strategy Produces notes that are not accurate. Places only a few concepts in an appropriate hierarchy or uses only a few linking words; Produces notes that are fairly accurate but with several missed details. Constructs appropriate and complete notes; places concepts in an appropriate hierarchy and places linking words in all connections; produces notes that are accurate. Exceptionally constructs outstanding notes; effectively places concepts in the most appropriate hierarchy and places linking words in all connections; produces helpful notes that are correct and easily understood.

Assignment What are the problems you encounter whenever you take down notes? What strategies or solutions do you employ to address these problems? List down at least five. Present it using a chart like the one on the next slide.
