6. Operational Definition It defines something in terms of a process that it undergoes to determine its existence, quantity, and duration. This is constructed based on the observational characteristics of that which is being defined.

7. Operational Definition It defines something (e.g., variable, item, or object) in terms of the specific process in which it was involved. It states how the term is used in a particular study . Operational definitions explain how a concept is measured or observed in a specific situation.

Type A Operational Definition – can be constructed by stating the operations or actions that need to be performed in order to cause a phenomenon or state to occur Types of Operational Definition Class participation can be achieved by providing classroom prompts that stimulate thought or pique students’ interest.

Type B Operational Definition – can be constructed by describing how a particular thing operates Class participation refers to the number of times a student raises his or her hand to answer a teacher’s given question, to comment on a fellow student’s answer, or to ask a question pertinent to the class discussion during each one-hour classroom session.

10. Type C Operational Definition – can be constructed by stating what a phenomenon or object looks like. This involves stating its static characteristics. Class participation is the tendency of a student to contribute to an ongoing classroom discussion through questions, answers, or other relevant comments.

13. Mental Health Awareness Form groups of five. Create a poster for a certain mental illness. No groups must cover the same illness. Then, to accompany the poster, write operational definitions for the illness. Remind them to expound on how the illness originates, how the illness works, and what characteristics become evident in an ill person. Present your poster in class.
