Lesson 5.1 Misplaced Modifiers

Misplaced modifiers happen when a modifier is not placed right next to the word it modifies.

Identify the modifier in the sentence. Determine if it is describing the correct word or phrase. Identifying Misplaced Modifiers The delivery man spoke to the recipient’s relative who delivered the package .

Place the modifier next to the word it should logically modify. Correcting Misplaced Modifiers The delivery man who delivered the package spoke to the recipient’s relative.

Try correcting these sentences. The volleyball players won the trophy wearing green jersey shirts. Our hopes grew smaller to win first place in the contest. The girl waited for the blonde bus.

Write “C” if the statement does not have a misplaced modifier, or write “M” if it does. ____1. We decided to go to another restaurant after going through a confusing menu in another. ____ 2. After making the bed, we came down to have breakfast. ____3. The dog ate the food that was hungry.

____4. I opened my Christmas gift extremely excited. ____5. Flying swiftly into the sky, I watched the dove come toward me. ____6. I rescued a wounded cat under an abandoned car. ____7. Crushed beyond repair, I watched my mobile phone from my window as it fell.

Rewrite the following sentences, correcting the misplaced modifier. Jessica figured what is wrong in the sentence after a few minutes. After seeing its expression, Mira and Meinard gave the food to the dog on a large plate. Sandy finally buys the clothes pondering about its price. The poet wrote a plethora of poems wandering in the forest.

5. The hunter waited for the birds from the tree with a bow and arrow. 6. Lorna put all the books inside her cabinet that she bought from the bookstore. 7. The gray dog wandered in the field sniffing around. 8. The painter captured the mood of the scenery with his amazing talent. 9. The painting was placed on the wall, which illustrates the scene we saw on our trip. 10. The coffee was spilled on the table that was scorching.

A modifier is a word or group of words that describe other words in the sentence. A modifier is misplaced if it is not placed right next to the word it describes. Having a misplaced modifier in a sentence will make it awkward, confusing, and illogical.

You will assume the role of the president of the Philippines. Ask yourself, “If one day I am elected as the president of the country, what changes will I make in the Philippines?” Write a three- to five-paragraph descriptive essay about it. Share your work with the class.
