Measure of central tendency of ungrouped data

Ungrouped data Ungrouped data is commonly preferred when data is collected by the researcher, as it is a simple list of numbers.

Measure Central tendency A measure of central tendency (also referred to as measures of center or central location) is a summary measure that attempts to describe a whole set of data with a single value that represents the middle or center of its distribution. There are three main measures of central tendency: Mean , Median and Mode .

mean The mean (average) of a data set is found by adding all numbers in the data set and then dividing by the number of values in the set.

Example The weights of 10 grade 8 students in kilogram. 45, 56, 47, 60, 46, 46, 47, 49, 50, 54

Example The height of students in centimeter. 154, 166, 167, 160, 146, 175, 167, 140, 153, 145, 155, 152

Try This The grades of 16 students in Mathematics. 83, 84, 84, 89, 88, 86, 90, 91, 87, 88, 91, 92, 92, 85, 88, 89

Try This The grades of a student in third quarter. 83, 84, 84, 89, 86, 90, 91, 87,

median The median is the middle value when a data set is ordered from least to greatest.

Example The height of 11 students in centimeter. 154, 166, 167, 160, 146, 175, 168, 140, 153, 145, 155,

Example The weights of 10 grade 8 students in kilogram. 45, 56, 47, 60, 46, 46, 47, 49, 50, 54

Try This The grades of a student in third quarter. 83, 84, 84, 89, 86, 90, 91, 87, 90

Try This The grades of 16 students in Mathematics. 83, 84, 84, 89, 88, 86, 90, 91, 87, 88, 91, 92, 92, 85, 88, 89

mode The mode is the number that occurs most often in a data set.

Example The height of 12 students in centimeter. 166, 166, 147, 160, 155, 175, 168, 140, 155, 145, 155, 152

Example The weights of 10 grade 8 students in kilogram. 45, 51, 47, 60, 46, 46, 47, 65, 50, 54

Try This The grades of a student in third quarter. 83, 92, 84, 84, 89, 87 86, 90, 91, 87,92, 87

Try This The grades of 16 students in Mathematics. 89, 84, 84, 89, 88, 84, 90, 91, 87, 88, 91, 92, 92, 85, 88, 89

range The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values in a set of numbers.

Example The height of 12 students in centimeter. 156, 166, 147, 160, 155, 175, 168, 140, 154, 145, 155, 152

Example The weights of 10 grade 8 students in kilogram. 45, 50, 47, 60, 46, 46, 47, 65, 50, 54

Try This The grades of a student in third quarter. 85, 92, 84, 83, 89, 87 86, 90, 91, 87,92, 87
