Astheymature,thefolliclessecreteincreasingamountsofestrogen,
whichthickensthenewfunctionallayerofendometriumintheuterus
Estrogenalsostimulatescryptsinthecervixtoproducefertilecervical
mucus
Attheendofthisphaseovulationoccurs

OVULATION
•Duringthefollicularphase,estrogensuppressesproductionofluteinizing
hormone(LH)fromthepituitarygland
•Whentheovumhasnearlymatured,levelsofestrogenreachathresholdabove
whichtheystimulateproductionofLH(positivefeedbackloop)
•ThereleaseofLHmaturestheovumandweakensthewallofthefollicleinthe
ovary,causingthefullydevelopedfollicletoreleaseitssecondaryoocyte
•Afterbeingreleasedfromtheovary,theovumissweptintothefallopiantube
