MENTAL HEALTH – from US N ational Institute of Health Includes our emotional, psychological, and social well being It affects how we think, feel and act as we cope with life It helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices
According from WHO( World Health Organization) Subjective well-being Perceived self efficacy Autonomy Competence Intergenerational dependence Self actualization of one’s intellectual and emotional potential among others
Subjective well being Defined as one’s personal thoughts and feelings about one’s ove r all state of being. Denotes positive and healthy interpretations of person’s self concept and how person’s feel about himself Positive self-concept: charms and confidence, sociable, productive and maintain healthy relationships Negative self concept: perceives herself unattractive, comparing, jealous, anxious
Perceived self- efficacy Defined as “one’s perception of one’s value and worth, effectiveness and ability in performing a task or activity. Anchored on one’s “self esteem, self worth/value” Low esteem – not worthy of being loved, produces anger , hopelessness Healthy esteem – self fulfillment, live happier and fulfilling lives
autonomy Deals with one’s capacity to separate one’s identity from one significant persons like parents, lovers and special friends. Capacity for self- direction and a clear defined role identity
competence Related to self-esteem and self identity It is a perception of one’s capacity to effectively perform functions or activity using specific skills and knowledge and achieving desired results at given time Responsibility – major underlying factor
Intergenerational independence Refers to relationships between individuals who belong to different generations but may living separately as independent, autonomous during specific period of time Example- extended family
Self-actualization ( maslow’s ) Once a persons fulfills his or her physiological needs, security and safety needs, emotional and social needs, self –esteem needs Key characteristics : Acceptance to reality Have compassions to help solve problem of other Spontaneous with their thoughts and behavior Open to change Strong need for privacy Highly appreciative of events Experience peak of intense joy and happiness Nurture good mental health and well-being
