MERCURY EXPOSURE BREAKING NEWS

BREAKING NEWS 4

Introduction Mercury is an extremely toxic pollutant that currently being emitted and distributed globally. Mercury (also known by the chemical symbol ‘Hg’) is an odorless, silver, naturally occurring liquid metal. It can be converted to 3 main forms: Elemental (metallic) mercury (Hg ) Inorganic mercury salts, for example mercuric chloride Organic mercury, for example methyl mercury 5

Elemental mercury is the most volatile form of mercury. It has a vapour pressure of 0.3 Pa at 25°C and transforms into the vapour phase at room temperatures. In particularly, if elemental mercury is not enclosed, elemental mercury evaporates and forms mercury vapours which dissolve only slightly in water (56 μg /L at 25°C). Mercury vapours are colourless and odourless . The higher temperature, the more vapours are released from liquid elemental mercury. 6 Introduction

7 ELEMENTAL MERCURY SOURCES

At high concentrations, mercury vapour inhalation produces acute necrotizing bronchitis and pneumonitis which could lead to death from respiratory failure. Long term exposure to mercury vapour primarily affects the central nervous system. Mercury also accumulates in kidney tissues, directly causing renal toxicity, including proteinuria or nephritic syndrome. 8 HEALTH RISK

It is important/compulsory to have a mercury spill kit especially in laboratory such as school laboratory, commercial lab, research lab and hospitals. When mercury thermometer is broken, a small amount of liquid mercury may spill out. Liquid mercury can separate into small beads, which can roll some distance away. The mercury may also evaporate into vapor at room temperature 25 °C . Mercury in the laboratory include thermometers, and barometers. 9 WHY SPILLAGE KIT REQUIRED?

Other sources of mercury is fluorescent lamps. A small amount of mercury is vaporized by heaters at both end of the tube and lights up when current is applied. The inner coating on the tube produces the white light. When fluorescent lamps are broken, the mercury they contain is released into the atmosphere, and this is potentially hazardous. More mercury is released from the inner coating of the lamp. 10 OTHER HAZARDOUS RISK

MERCURY SPILL KIT ; Value proposition : Portable Light weight Full safety compliant Contain PPE, handling equipment, and guideline book Contain non toxic agent which chemically binds to mercury This product contain Nitrile gloves, dust mask, goggle, shoe covers, brush, scoop, sticky tape , biohazard bag, Hg indicator, AM01, AM02 and Hg vapour suppressant spray . This product will help to clean up mercury decontamination safely and preventing the release of toxic mercury vapor into the air. This product is easier and safer to clean mercury spillage. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

12 1. What (competitive) advantage does your technology have over the current state-of-the-art? Currently in Malaysia there is no locally produced mercury spill kit based on our market survey provided in school laboratory, commercial lab, research lab and hospitals. This product is used to decontaminate and control mercury spillage. This product has additional control, comprehensive measures and full compliant to DOSH requirement compared to competitor. 2. Please mention any technology limitations in your invention. None 3. Have you built a functioning prototype? Yes. Tested and proven in lab. DESCRIPTION OF THE TECHNOLOGY

No Product Description/Function 1 Nitrile Gloves To handle mercury spill from adsorb into skin. 2 Dust Mask (N95) To protect inhalation from AM01, AM02 and Hg indicator when handling with mercury spillage. Mercury Kit ( Merkit )

No Product Description 3 Goggle To protect eyes when handling mercury spillage. 4 Shoe Covers To protect foot when handling mercury spillage. 5 Scoop + Brush To handle mercury spill when mix with AM01 and AM02 Mercury Kit ( Merkit )

No Product Description 6 Sticky Tape To attract some mercury spill. 7 Biohazard Bag with zip To collect waste when handling mercury spillage. 8 Hg Indicator To detect mercury. Hg indicator powder reacts with mercury vapour to give a dark colour . Mercury Kit ( Merkit )

No Product Description 9 AM01 To bind with mercury and use as adsorbent powder in decontamination. 10 AM02 To bind with mercury and use as adsorbent powder in decontamination. 11 Hg vapour suppressant spray To prevent mercury vapour from escaping into the atmosphere Mercury Kit ( Merkit )
