Metals & Non-metals Comparing Properties

One Two Three State where metals and non-metals are located in the periodic table. Describe the differences in properties in metals and non-metals. Explain metal properties in terms of electrons. Learning Points

Metals Metals & the Periodic Table Metals are located on the left hand side and in the middle of the periodic table. The elements in group 1 and 2 are metals, as well as the transition metals in the middle.

Non-metals & the Periodic Table Non-metals are located on the right hand side of the periodic table. Non-metals Non-metals can be found in the earlier periods in groups 4 to 7. All of group 0 are non-metals.

Copper Metal Examples Iron Zinc Gold Potassium Sodium

Oxygen Non- metal Examples Nitrogen Carbon Neon Boron Helium

Good electrical conductors Good heat conductors Shiny (lustrous) High density Malleable Ductile Metals Poor electrical conductors Poor heat conductors Dull in appearance Low density Brittle Comparing Properties Non-Metals

+ + + + + + + + The key properties of metals, are due to their specific structure. Metal Structure Positive metal ions Delocalised electrons

+ + + + + + + + Metals are good conductors of electricity. Conductivity Delocalised electrons are free to move around. When they move around, they carry electrical charge. Reason

+ - Metals have a high melting point. Melting Point There is a strong electrostatic attraction between the delocalized electrons and the positive metal ions. A large amount of thermal energy is required to overcome this. Reason

+ + + + + + + + Metals are malleable. They can be hammered into shape. Malleability The metal atoms (or ions) slide over each other when a force is applied. This allow metals to change shape on impact. Reason

+ + + + + + + + Metals generally have a shiny (lustrous) appearance. Shiny Appearance Metals have delocalised electrons on the surface which reflect light energy. Reason
