What is a word Processor A word processor is a device or computer program that provides for input, editing, formatting, and output of text, often with some additional features .
So, the term Word Processing refers to the act of processing the textual information including typing, editing, formatting and printing . The following are examples of word processing software.
HOW TO START MSWORD Method 1 1. Take the mouse pointer to start button on the task bar. Click the left mouse button. 2. Move the pointer to programs. You will notice another menu coming up to the right. 3. In that menu identify where Microsoft word is placed. Move the cursor horizontally to come out of the programs. 4. Move into the rectangular area meant for the MS word. Click the left mouse button there. The computer will start MS-word

Besides these two methods other methods for opening word are: Using Run Command. Using DOS: Specify the absolute path to open WINWORD.EXE title. After writing the absolute path the MS-Word will open up.

Components on the screen (A) Menu bar: the word menu is displayed at the top of the screen. The main menu further display a sub menu. Some of the option are highlighted option and some of the option are appear as faded.at any time only highlighted options are executed, faded options are not applicable. The menu bar is look like:
Home: This contains the most-used Word features, such as changing fonts and font attributes, customizing paragraphs, using styles, and finding and replacing text. Insert : As you might guess, this one handles anything you might want to insert into a document, such as tables, pictures, charts, hyperlinks, bookmarks, headers and footers, WordArt ... etc.
Page Layout: This is where you'll change margins, page size and orientation, set up columns, align objects and add effects. There is some overlap between this tab and the Home tab. E.G. On the Page Layout tab you set paragraph spacing and indents, while on the Home tab you set paragraph alignment and can also set spacing between lines. References: This tab handles tables of contents, footnotes, bibliographies, indexes and similar material. It also lets you insert a "Table of Authorities," which like a security setting but is in fact is a list of references in a legal document.
Mailings : As the name says, this is where you'll go for anything to do with mailings, from something as simple as creating labels to the more intimidating task of mail merges. Review : To check spelling and grammar use the thesaurus, track changes, review other people's changes or compare documents? This is the tab to use. View : This tab allows you to change the view in any way, including displaying a ruler and gridlines, zooming in and out, splitting a window and so on.
(B) Tool bar: word has number of tool bars that help you perform task faster and with great ease. Toolbar provides shortcuts to menu command. Tool bar is just located just above the menu bar. Two of most commonly tool bar are the formatting tool bar and standard tool bar. These two tool bar are displayed just below the title bar. At any point of time any tool bar can be made on or off through the tool bar option of view menu.

Selecting text . To Select a Word place the mouse pointer on the word to be selected and double click the left mouse button to select that word. The selected word will appear in reverse color.
To Select a Line Bring the mouse pointer to the beginning of the line in the left margin. Click the left mouse button to select the line.
To Select a paragraph keep the mouse pointer anywhere within the paragraph and triple click left mouse button to select that paragraph .
To Select a Large Block of Text Click at the beginning of the text, hold down the Shift Key and click at the end of the text.
