MID DAY MEAL PROGRAMME Mid day meal is a wholesome freshly cooked served to children in Govt and Govt aided schools in India. In MDMS, every child in every Govt and Govt aided primary school was to be served a prepared mid day meal with a minimum content of (300 calories) of energy and (8-12gm) of proteins per day for a minimum of 200 days. Tamil Nadu was the first to initiate a massive meal programmer.
Contd….. In Mid Day Meal three areas improved which are as mentioned: School attendance. Reduced drop out. Beneficial impact on children nutrition.
OBJECTIVES OF MDMS Improving the nutritional status of children in classes (1-8 th ) in Govt local body and Govt aided schools. Encouraging poor children belonging to disadvantaged section to attend school more regularly and help them to concentrate on school activities. Providing nutritional support to children of primary school.
MDMS Main objective: Attract more children for admission to school and return them for literacy. Principle: Its only a supplement not substitute for home food. Cheap , Simple, cooking of locally available food. Changing menu: No Monotonous food. 1/3 calories and 1/2 proteins
Contd….. Ministry : MHRD Minimum: 250 days/ Year. Primary: 450 kcal and 12 gm proteins. New recommendations: Increased cereal intake: Primary – 100-90gm. Upper- 150-125gm. Double fortified salt with iodine. Oil should be minimum of (3) combinations: Ghee/ Palmolein/ Coconut oil. (CGP), Sunflower/ Mustard/ Soybean oil.
