Done By \ Mona Atef G-6 Why People migrate

Why do we do migration? Factors such as poverty, lack of economic opportunity, land shortage and low living standards at home function as push factors, while prosperity, opportunity, available employment and higher living standards in the place of destination are pull factors. Migration is defined as movement from one country, place or locality to another in search of better opportunities to settle. When people move from one place to another, the place they move from is called the Place of Origin and the place they move to is called the Place of Destination.

Why is migration so important? Migrants fill essential jobs in countries of destination and have much to contribute to their countries of origin through the transfer of remittances and knowledge, trade and foreign direct investment.

Some reasons why migration statistics are so important: Reliable data allow for the inclusion of all migrants in policy making. Good policies depend on sound evidence and assessments, which help to decide on the best action. Migration data allow for highlighting migrants’ contributions. Migrants fill essential jobs in countries of destination and have much to contribute to their countries of origin through the transfer of remittances and knowledge,. Is migration good or bad? Migration can have positive and negative impacts on both host and origin countries. Migration can lead to increased cultural diversity in a host country. Migrants may experience forms of segregation, discrimination or cultural clashes. Assimilation occurs over time, as migrants settle in their host country.

Negatives impacts: Pressure on public services such as schools, housing and healthcare; Overcrowding; Language and cultural barriers can exist; Increased level of pollution; Increased pressure on natural resources; Racial tensions and discrimination; Gender imbalance – usually more men migrate.

According to the World Migration Report, there were around 281 million international migrants in 2021—that’s a 27% increase compared to figures from just over a decade ago (2010) when there were 221 million migrants who’d crossed international borders. For the most part, international migration is an economic decision and has maintained a predictable trend: skilled knowledge workers moving from developing economies such as Nigeria, Mexico, India, the Philippines, and Egypt to high-income, developed countries such as the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia.
