COMMUNICATION and the MEDIA
COMMUNICATION - is a process of sharing ideas and opinions about issues, people, events and places between or among person through various channels with the intent to gain common understanding. -is an interactive process that allows sharing of meanings about text , images and people’s actions and behavior. The process is courses through verbal and nonverbal means of relaying information or through the use of media such as print, broadcast, electronic, or new media.
To differenciate , the term COMMUNICATIONS refers to the technical means of communication or the channels through which messages are conveyed. Mobile phone and computers are part of communications. However the process involving people using the technologies is called communication. In this context that the term communications also includes the media, the channels through which we communicate.
MEDIA In communication, media are the outlets or tools used to store and deliver content; semantic information or subject matter of which the media contains. The term generally refers to components of the mass media communications industry, such as print media, publishing, the news media, photography, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television), digital media, and advertising.
TWO CLASSIFICATION OF MEDIA TRADITIONAL MEDIA- include the mass media such as newspapers, radio and television. NEW MEDIA- include computers , mobile phones and other digital gadgets.
With the convergence of media that refers to the coming together of traditional and new media , media has become more sophisticated and complex but more facilitative and efficient. Students now can read their lesson using electronic books or can listen to the radio through the internet via live streaming.
INFORMATION is not always textual form , as a message it may also be in video , sound, image, graphics, animation and other non verbal forms. On the other hand, information refers to the message conveyed by a sender to its recipient through various channels. MULTIMEDIA- is a form of communication that uses a combination of different content forms, such as writing, audio, images, animations, or video, into a single interactive presentation, in contrast to traditional mass media, such as printed material or audio recordings, which feature little to no interaction between users. Popular examples of multimedia include video podcasts, audio slideshows.
THE PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION Whenever you've had a conversation, texted a friend, or given a business presentation, you have engaged in communication . Any time two or more people get together to exchange messages, they are engaging in this basic process. Although it seems simple, communication is actually quite complex and has a number of components. The term communication process refers to the exchange of information (a message ) between two or more people. For communication to succeed, both parties must be able to exchange information and understand each other. If the flow of information is blocked for some reason or the parties cannot make themselves understood, then communication fails.
FIVE ELEMENTS THAT CHARACTERIZED THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS The Interactors ( Sender and Recipient of the message) The Message or Information The medium The feedback or reaction The communication environment
THE INTERACTORS The Sender - The communication process begins with the sender , who is also called the communicator or source . The sender has some kind of information — a command, request, question, or idea — that he or she wants to present to others. For that message to be received, the sender must first encode the message in a form that can be understood, such as by the use of a common language or industry jargon, and then transmit it. The Receiver - The person to whom a message is directed is called the receiver or the interpreter . To comprehend the information from the sender, the receiver must first be able to receive the sender's information and then decode or interpret it.
THE MESSAGE The message or content is the information that the sender wants to relay to the receiver. Additional subtext can be conveyed through body language and tone of voice. Put all three elements together — sender, receiver, and message — and you have the communication process at its most basic.
THE MEDIUM Also called the channel , the medium is the means by which a message is transmitted. Text messages, for example, are transmitted through the medium of cell phones.
THE FEEDBACK The communication process reaches its final point when the message has been successfully transmitted, received, and understood. The receiver, in turn, responds to the sender, indicating comprehension. Feedback may be direct, such as a written or verbal response, or it may take the form of an act or deed in response (indirect). Is the response to a message or behavior
THE COMMUNICATION ENVIRONMENT Is the context in which the communication takes place .
THE PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
Activity Homework What are the different roles of mass media in society? How does the mass media influence our decisions, values, and beliefs? Give some example. List down all available media information resources at home and explain why you need them.
