Millets: A Super Food or A Diet Fad Prepared by: Om Prasad Sahu Class- 10 th Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya , Kabisuryanagar

Introduction The highly nutritious millets are one of the earliest crops that we have cultivated. It is probably the first crop that humankind ever produced. Millet cultivation dates back to around 2500 BC in India. Although its importance as a super food is acknowledged, millets are increasingly regarded as ‘poor man’s food’ in common opinion. India is the largest producer of Millets in the World. In India, millets are grown on about 17 million hectares with annual production of 18 million tonnes and contribute 10 percent to the country’s food grain basket.

What are Millets ? Millets, also known as ‘ Shree Anna ’ and ‘ Nutri -cereals ’, are highly varied group of small-seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cereal crops or grains for fodder and human food.  Millets are often referred to as Super food and its production can be seen as an approach for  Sustainable Development and a healthy world. Millets’ numerous health advantages, sustainability, and adaptability have led to their designation as a super food. Millets are good source of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They can be used as a substitute for rice or other grains. Major types of Millets are : Ragi (Finger Millet), Bajra (Pearl Millet), Proso Millet, Kodo Millet, Jowar (Sorghum Millet), Foxtail Millet, Little Millet, Barnyard Millet and etc .

International Year of Millets 2023 The United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets in March 5, 2021.  The theme for the year is ‘ Harnessing the untapped potential of millets for food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture’ .  The goal of the year is to raise awareness and increase the production and consumption of millets. Steps Taken by Government Increasing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of millets to incentivize farmers Including millets in the public distribution system to ensure a steady market Providing financial assistance to farmers for growing millets Encouraging the production of value-added millet-based products Developing the farm-gate processing and empowering farmers through collectives Implementing the National Food Security Mission (NFMS) in 212 districts of 14 states Launching the Shree Anna Yojana to promote the cultivation and production of millets

Conclusion It is probably because of the  lack of awareness . We do not have so much marketing and advertising for this gem of the natural ingredients. Despite being the ancient ingredients , not many people know about it. The influence of Western food habits & increasing trend of high consumption of refined cereals and sedentary lifestyle has worsened the health scenario among Indian population. Millets seems to be one stop solution for all these problems. Recent surge in demand for the millets is prompting farmers to take up millet’s cultivation, contribute to sustainable agriculture, increasing income of farmers, protecting environment and improving the health and nutritional status of population.
