Groundwater game Sandeep, PhD Fellow, East-West Center Groundwater Game

Quick Instructions One imaginary aquifer with 50 liters of water. This is maximum, and can’t exceed this limit. Ideal for 4-6 players in a group. Two crops to choose from. Crop A needs less water but yields less money; Crop B needs more water but yields more money. The game starts with 50 liters of water and lasts for a certain number of rounds. At the beginning of each round circle the crop that you wish to cultivate; Crop A or Crop B.

The facilitator comes around and notes the choice. Facilitator will announce the total water consumed, based on the individual decisions. In each round, the group uses up TWO liters of water for domestic use.

You play a certain no of rounds. The game starts with 50 liters of water At the beginning of each round, mark the crop of your choice on the decision form that you have. Basically circle if you want A or B. please keep your decision to yourself The facilitator comes around and notes the choice. And announces the total water consumed from the aquifer, based on the individual decisions.

In each round, the group pays $ 2towards water for domestic consumption Following this someone with a lucky hand throws the dice to determine the recharge. When the water level hits yellow, EACH PLAYER pays $ 1 to buy water for domestic consumption When the water level hits red, the game ends. For each virtual dollar that you earn in the game you get 5 real dollars or its peso equivalency from Pres. Enya.

Do’s and don'ts for instructors DO NOT reveal individual choices to the group. Exceptions may apply. ALWAYS announce the collective water usage to the group. Once water level hits 20 liters, be sure to deduct $1 from EACH player. DO NOT influence the players’ decisions in any way or prompt them to make a particular decision. Don’t tell them how to play. DO NOT push players towards ‘conservation’. DO NOT announce the number of rounds that the players are going to play for. If the game ends quickly, you may reset the water level and ask the players to resume the game. Please ensure that players are not showing their forms to each other. Exceptions may apply.
