INTRODUCTION 3 An antenna is an essential part of a radio system since it transmits and receives electromagnetic waves in a desired manner.

ANTENNA PARAMETERS 4 Radiation Pattern (Omnidirectional and Directional) Polarization (Linear and Circular)

RECONFIGURABLE ANTENNA Reconfigurable antenna is an antenna that can dynamically change its operating parameters such as frequency, radiation pattern and polarization. Pattern reconfigurable antennas are versatile in adapting to various environmental conditions. The adjusting of radiation pattern leads to more reliable and efficient smart WiFi devices. Polarization reconfigurable antennas are versatile in adapting in changes to various polarization states. 5

PROBLEM STATEMENT Pattern reconfigurable antennas are not capable of covering the entire horizontal azimuthal plane. Reconfigurable antennas do not change both polarization states and radiation patterns Reconfigurable antennas are too large for smart WiFi devices. 6

LITERATURE REVIEW 7 TITLE DESIGN FINDINGS DRAWBACKS “The monopole slot: A small broad-band unidirectional antenna” Using Huygens Principle, a generalized magnetoelectric dipole antenna was proposed and successfully achieved unidirectional radiation. It was too large (slot length = λ /2 [ i.e 17.8cm] at about 845MHz and cavity depth is λ /4 [11.8cm]) “A Simple Polarization Reconfigurable Printed Monopole Antenna” A printed monopole antenna capable of changing between 3 polarization states was achieved. It is not pattern reconfigurable

TITLE DESIGN FINDINGS DRAWBACKS “Center -fed Unilateral and Pattern Reconfigurable Planar Antennas with Slotted Ground Plane ” By combining two orthogonal dipoles with the same radiation intensities, unilateral patterns with wide beamwidth and high front-to-back ratio is presented Low beam quality due to failure of exciting the same degree to both the electric and magnetic dipoles “ Ultralow-Profile, Electrically Small, Pattern-Reconfigurable Metamaterial-Inspired Huygens Dipole Antenna ” The antenna realized two independent unidirectional end-fire radiation states Failed to cover the horizontal orientation 8

OBJECTIVES To design a miniaturized planar polarization and pattern reconfigurable antenna operating at 2.4 GHz WLAN band (2.40-2.48 GHz); Scanning angle should be 360 ̊(on the azimuth plane) A high gain (>3dBi) A high front-to-back ratio (>15dB) The antenna should have a small compact size (40mm x 40mm x 2mm) Switching between linear and circular polarization for 2.4 GHz WLAN band. 9

The proposed design of the miniaturized planar pattern reconfigurable antenna 10 METHODOLOGY Equivalent circuit models for PIN diode ON/OFF states F4BM substrate ( ε r = 2.2, tan δ = 0.001) dimensions: 40mm x 40mm x 2mm. Z shaped loops have bias circuits consisting of a PIN diode ( MA4AGP907, = 0.15 nH , = 5.2 Ω, = 15000 Ω, = 0.025 pF ) Resistor , inductor and capacitor of values 100 Ω , 56nH and 100pF respectively Grounded probe 50 Ω (ohm) coaxial cable at the center

CONCLUSION A miniaturized planar pattern reconfigurable antenna is presented. Modification would be made to antenna design to attain a resonant frequency of 2.45 GHz below -10dB . Obtain radiation patterns. To achieve circular polarization. 14
