Minicomputers & supercomputers Presented by : Abraham Fernández E.

What is Computer? A computer is a devices that takes in data, processes it according to a program and than outputs the processes data in some form. There is an increasing variety of computers of different sizes and designed for different purposes. One of the most important considerations when buying computer is deciding how it is going to used. Minicomputers are really cut-down mainframes and are no longer very common. The most common type of computer is the minicomputer. A mini computer has different uses among them being scientific calculations, business transaction processing and data base management. They are smaller in size than a normal laptop and are usually used when on the go or from anywhere, which gives them a big advantage. Minicomputers What is Computer? Mini computers are smaller than mainframes, both in size and other facilities such as speed, storage capacity and other services. They are versatile that they can be fitted where ever they are needed. Their speeds are rated between one and fifty million instructions per second (MIPS). They have primary storage in hundred to three hundred megabytes range with direct access storage device. Minicomputers What is Computer? 1- 7 Minicomputers Application Areas -Primarily used by sub-departments of companies to offload the company mainframe’s work. e.g. an inventory department might use a mini to provide better control of stock and to make predictions about future needs. Large scientific and research laboratories as well as the government organizations have extra ordinary demand for processing data which required tremendous processing speed, memory and other services which may not be provided with any other category to meet their needs. Therefore very large computers used are called Super Computers. These computers are extremely expensive and the speed is measured in billions of instructions per seconds. Most costly Prices begin at about $4 million. Largest Occupy large hall What is Computer? Types of Computer Minicomputers Super Computers A Look to the Future
