The Nature of Mathematics Patterns and Numbers in Nature

Presentation and Development of the Lesson One of the things about Mathematics that we love the most is it’s uncanny ability to reveal hidden beautiful patterns in our everyday life, the nature around us. These patterns can be sequential, spatial, temporal, and even linguistic . There are connections between things that don’t seem connected, but can be observed with the intellect of math.  The Fibonacci Sequence is the series of numbers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, ...

The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it : the 2 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+1), the 3 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+2), the 5 is (2+3), and so on! Each number is the sum of the previous two. This series of numbers is known as the  Fibonacci numbers  or the  Fibonacci sequence . The ratio between the numbers (1.618034) is frequently called the  golden ratio  or  golden number .

Fibonacci numbers appear in nature often enough to prove that they reflect some naturally occurring patterns. You can commonly spot these by studying the manner in which various plants grow.

Here are a few examples: the snowflakes and honeycomb; tiger’s stripes and hyenas spots; the sunflower; the snail shell, flower petals

Generalization of the Lesson The patterns and numbers in nature proves one thing - we can say mathematics is the science of patterns. Recognizing number patterns is an important problem-solving skill. If you recognize a pattern when looking systematically at specific examples, that pattern can then be used to make things easier when needing a solution to a problem
