Bangladesh Telecommunications Company (BTCL), the state owned wire line services accounts
for 14.4 percent of telecom industry revenues, at $226.66 million. It doesn’t provide mobile services.

Friday, September 21, 2012. The country now has 9.55 crore mobile users which was 8.5 crore in
December last year, according to the website of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory
Commission.However, the number of total subscription means the number of valid connections or sold

. According to a study run by telecom equipment vendor Ericsson with the assistance of ACNielsen, a
global marketing research firm, 81 percent mobile subscribers in Bangladesh use one SIM, 15 percent use
two SIMs and 4 percent use three SIMs.
Multiple SIM users mostly use dual SIM enabled handsets while 33 percent users have more than
one handset,
Market Share: According to the study published in 31 March 2012,
As
at 31 March 2012, Grameenphone had a market share of 42.2%. In addition to Grameenphone, there are
five other mobile operators in Bangladesh. These operators and their market shares as at31 March 2012
are: Banglalink (27.5%), Robi (19.8%), Airtel Bangladesh (7.1%), Citycell (2.0%) and Teletalk (1.4%).
Competition among operators is intense and tariff levels are amont the lowest in the world
Mobile phone operator Shares and investment :
Bangladesh introduced cellular mobile phone service after India and Pakistan. In the huge mobile phone
market in Bangladesh there are 6 operators:
(i) Citycell (joint venture with SingTel Asia-Pacific Investment Limited), the first mobile
communication company of Bangladesh, was set up in 1993 and it is the only CDMA
network operator in the country;
(ii) Grameenphone, popularly known as GP, a Norwegian company (stake of the Norwegian
Telenor is 55.8 per cent; Grameen Telecom has 34.2 per cent share and public share is 10 per
cent), came into Bangladesh in November 28, 1996;
(iii) Robi (stake of Axiata Group Berhad is 70 per cent and that of NTT DoCoMo is 30 per cent),
came in 1997;
(iv) Banglalink, a subsidiary of Egypt-based Orascom Telecom, started in 2005
(v) TeleTalk, the only state-owned company, started operating on December 29, 2004;
(vi) Airtel (formerly Warid, stake of Bharti Airtel is 70 per cent and that of Warid Telecom 30 is
per cent), launched commercial operations in 2007.

According to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the number of
mobile phone subscribers in Bangladesh as of February 2009 was 45.21 million which reached
85.455 million at the end of December 2011 Bangladesh’s wireless sector suffered a slow down
to below average growth but according to Market Watch,. The ITU report estimated Bangladesh
telecom industry revenues at $1.57 billion:

Grameenphone
Having started its operations in 1997, Grameenphone now provides voice, data and other value added
services on prepaid and contract basis Notable among these is the Healthline, a 24 hour medical call
centre manned by licensed physicians. Other innovations include Studyline, a call centre-based service
providing education related information, Mobicash, for electronic purchase of train and lottery tickets,
Billpay, for paying utility bills through mobile phones and over 500 community information centres
across Bangladesh. These centres bring affordable Internet access and other information based services
to people in rural areas.

Share Market History: GrameenPhone is the highest contributor of revenues to the Bangladesh Telecom
market, with 50.2 percent of all telecom revenues in the country at $789 million. Telenor-
owned GrameenPhone is the oldest and largest operator with 22.3 million connections in October and
almost 43 percent market share. Grameenphone became stock listed in November 2009, with, as at the
date of this Base Prospectus, the largest public offering in Bangladesh. It is listed on both the Dhaka and
Chittagong Stock Exchanges.
Market rate : As of 31 March 2012,Market share 42.2%. Telenor held 55.8% of the shares in
Grameenphone, while Grameen Telecom, the other main shareholder, held 34.2%. The remaining 10% of
the shares were held by general retail and institutional investors.
Oparater subscribers: As at 31 March 2012, Grameenphone had 37.6 million subscriptions, while the
estimated mobile penetration (SIM cards) and number of inhabitants in Bangladesh were 56% and 160
million, respectively Grameenphone led with 37.63 million subscribers in March, up from 37.35 million

Orascom Telecom Holding s.a.e., Egypt, (OTH) in Bangladesh. It was acquired by in 2004, and its services
were re-launched under the brand name banglalink. When banglalink began operations in Bangladesh in
February 2005, its impact was felt immediately: overnight mobile telephony became an affordable
option for customers acrossa wide range of market segments.
banglalink’s success was based on a simple mission: "bringing mobile telephony to the masses".
banglalinks slogan "making a difference" does not only reflect in the telecom industry, but also in its
products and services which makes difference to the lives of its customers.
Oparater subscribers: Banglalink currently has 25.49 million subscribers as of june 2012, Banglalink had
24.74 million customers, up from 24.71 million in February,

Bangladeshi mobile operator Robi Axiata has celebrated its second anniversary. The company claims to
have a market share of 19.08 percent and its customer base hit 16.52 million at end-January. The
operator's network covers 98 percent of the population in Bangladesh.
Robi Market rate: Robi claims market share of 19.08%
Oparater subscribers: Robi Axiata Bangladesh ended March with 89.47 million mobile subscribers, up
from 87.89 million in February. at end-February .Robi raised its subscriber base to 17.66 million in March
from 17.09 million a month earlier,

Citycell
(Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited) is the first mobile communications company of Bangladesh. It is
the only CDMA network operator in the country. As of 1 March 2008, Citycell's total mobile subscriber
base is 1.56 million, up 137 per cent or 680,000 from two years ago, giving it the best growth rate of the
company till date. Citycell is currently owned by Singtel with 45% stake and the rest 55% owned by
Pacific Group and Far East Telecom.However the slogan has remained unchanged "because we care"

Oparater subscribers: As of April 2012, Citycell has 1.801 million subscribers.Citycell had 1.78 million
subscribers, down from 1.79 million in February,
Airtel
Airtel Bangladesh has deployed 200 new base stations as part of a rapid network expansion programme,
and has a further 700 sites lined up for launching shortly. Last January, India's Bharti Airtel brought a
70% stake in Bangladesh's Warid Telecom, at the time a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dhabi Group -
and later rebranded it as Airtel Bangladesh.In a statement, the company said the recent expansion has
expanded its network to 160 new towns.The company has committed to invest US$300 million in its
network expansion.

Oparater subscribers: Airtel Bangladesh ended March with 6.33 million customers, up from 6.23
million in February.According to analysis by the Mobile World, the company ended last year with just 3.2
million customers,
TeleTalk
When TeleTalk first came into operation it brought in a hope among the people. The mission statement of
TeleTalk is "Desher Taka Deshey Rakhun" (Keep your money in your country) but ultimately it could not
retain its customers' expectation with a weak network service in this highly competitive market. Russia's
AFK Sistema and UAE-based telecom operator Etisalat showed interest to buy stakes in the state-run
TeleTalk. Recently Vietnam's Viettel also wanted to invest $250 million in

Oparater subscribers: Teletalk ended March with 1.28 million customers, up from 1.26 million in
February. 2012. TeleTalk had 1.147 million subscribers as up to July, 2010 which shows the growth rate
of subscribers is hardly increasing
