PERFORM MENSURATION & CALCULATION Presented by: Riza Quider Bedayo
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, you are expected to do the following: Select proper measuring instruments; and Carry out measurement and calculations.
DEFINITION OF TERMS Area Extent of part of a surface enclosed within a boundary Calculation The act or process of/or result of calculating Circumference Distance around the circle Classification Group or category within an organized system Decimal Number expressed in a counting system that uses units of 10, especially a decimal fraction Dimension Measurable extent such as length, thickness and width Fraction Number expressed as a quotient of two other numbers
DEFINITION OF TERMS Geometric Shapes Characterized by straight line, regular curves and angles Graduation Scale of a measuring tool Mensuration Act or art of measuring Perimeter Bounding line or curve of a plain area Standard Serves as a measure of reference Stock Refers to a lumber of a certain furniture job Substrate Wood to be cut in a cutting machine Volume Space inside a solid figure
SELECTING TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING STANDARDS Measuring tools are selected/identified as per object to be measured or job requirements. Correct specifications are obtained from relevant sources Measuring instruments are selected according to job requirements Alternative measuring tools are used without sacrificing cost and quality of work. Measurements are obtained according to job requirements
WHAT ARE THE FOLLOWING MEASURING TOOLS? Take a short recall of measuring tools that you already know.

SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENTS ENGLISH SYSTEM & SYSTÉME INTERNATIONAL (S.I.) The two (2) systems of measurements are: the English and the Metric System. English system originated in England also known as the U.S. customary system of measurement while the Metric System was developed in France and also known as the S.I. (International Standard) LINEAR MEASUREMENT ENGLISH METRIC Yard (yd) Meter (mts) Foot (ft) or (‘) Decimeter (1/10 mts) Inch (in) or (“) Centimeter (1/100 mts) Millimeter (1/1000 mts)
CARRY OUT MEASUREMENT AND CALCULATIONS Materials / Resources you will need in carrying-out measurement and calculations: Actual Objects to be measured Measuring Tools Record Book Pencil
READING OF MEASUREMENTS: READING THE “INCH” The inch is divided into segments called “graduations”. Each graduation represents a measurement in form of a proper fraction. The inch can be divided into 16, 8, 4, and 2, equal parts. illustration is not actual length of “Inch”
READING OF MEASUREMENTS: READING THE “CENTIMETER” illustration is not actual length of “Inch”
EXERCISE: CONVERTING FRACTION TO DECIMAL
EXERCISE: (ANSWER) CONVERTING FRACTION TO DECIMAL
CARRY OUT MEASUREMENT AND CALCULATIONS: CONVERTING UNITS OF MEASURE GUIDE TABLE IN UNIT CONVERSION English to English 1 foot = 12 inches Metric to Metric 1 meter = 10 decimeter (dm) 1dm = 10 centimeter English to Metric 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 inch = 25.4 mm 1 foot = 30.48 cm
CARRY OUT MEASUREMENT AND CALCULATIONS: CONVERTING UNITS OF MEASURE GUIDE TABLE IN UNIT CONVERSION Metric to English 1 meter = 3.28 feet 1 meter = 39.37 inches
Sample Solutions in Conversion: Foot to inches Inch to feet CARRY OUT MEASUREMENT AND CALCULATIONS: CONVERTING UNITS OF MEASURE
