MODALS Helping/auxiliary verbs that express ideas like  ability ,  advice , and  obligation . Don’t have past participial, present participial or bare-stem forms.

Pronouns Modal I You He She It We They Should, ought to, Had better Forms of the modals The same form with singular and plural subjects.

Should Give advice. S + should + V Base form + C. You should take a break. Ask for advice Should + S + V BF + C? Should I take the advanced English class? Negative form: should not or shouldn’t

Ought to Give advice S + ought to + V Base form + C. You ought to find a new job. Rarely used in the negative. Not used in questions.

Had better S + had better + V Base form + C. You had better lock your car when you park. Stronger than should and ought to. Something bad will happen Negative form: had better not Contraction: We’d better, You’d better, etc

Use maybe or I think to be polite. I think she shouldn’t be late. Maybe you ought to take a break

REMEMBER… Have the same form for all the subjects . Use the verb in base form . Used to talk about present and future advices .
