Models & Theories of Learning

Learning outcomes Identify key characteristics of selected commonly-used instructional design models Identify 4 main learning theories (behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism and connectivism) and their relationships to instructional design models Use Kolb’s and VARK learning model to distinguish and escribe different ways people learn and the implication of learning Recommend key steps for session/module design using proper instructional design

What Is Learning? Learning is the process of: Acquiring knowledge and skills Change in individual behaviour as a result of some experience (formal or informal) Copyright © 2019 by Nelson Education Ltd. 2-

Models of Learning

Learning Models Two models of learning: Kolb’s experiential learning theory Fleming’s VARK model Individuals differ in how they prefer to learn and how they learn best. These differences in learning preferences are known as learning styles . Copyright © 2019 by Nelson Education Ltd. 2-

Kolb’s Learning Style An individual learner moves through a spiral of immediate experience which leads to observations and reflections on the experience. These reflections are then absorbed and linked with previous knowledge and translated into abstract concepts or theories, which result in new ways and actions to adjust to the experience that can be tested and explored. The combination of learning modes (the way a person gathers information and the way a person processes information) results in a learning style . Copyright © 2019 by Nelson Education Ltd. 2-

Kolb’s Learning Styles People can learn best by using all four styles Kolb identifies a “learning cycle” in which people use all four modes of learning in a sequence Learning is most effective when all four steps in the learning cycle are part of the learning experience Copyright © 2019 by Nelson Education Ltd. 2-

Fleming’s VARK Model Copyright © 2019 by Nelson Education Ltd. 2- Visual learning (pictures, movies, diagrams) Auditory learning (music, discussion, lectures) Reading and writing (making lists, reading textbooks, taking notes) Kinesthetic learning (movement, experiments, hands-on activities, simulations)

Implications of Learning Style Theory for Training People differ in the way they prefer to learn Motivation and success in training depends on matching training (design, content, methods) with learning style Design training programs to appeal to people’s different learning styles Programs should be designed with each learning mode as part of a sequence of learning experiences Copyright © 2019 by Nelson Education Ltd. 2-

Implications of Learning Style Theory for Training Instructors should use a multi-modal approach that includes activities and methods that will appeal to the visual (e.g., diagrams, charts), aural/auditory (e.g., lectures, discussions), read/write (e.g., readings, handouts), and kinesthetic (e.g., demonstrations, practice) learning styles Copyright © 2019 by Nelson Education Ltd. 2-
