Lesson 2 Relationship of the Body and the Spirit

EMBODIED SPIRIT

Philosophers consider the human person as the union of the body and spirit. That why it is called “embodied spirit”. However, it does not necessarily mean incarnation or materialization of spirit (spirit becoming flesh). Embodiment means that the body is not separate from the soul and the soul is not separate from the body. Embodied Spirit

When we speak that the human person is an embodied spirit, we specifically mean that the human person is the point of convergence between the material and spiritual entities which is the body and soul. The spirit and the body go hand in hand in making us who we are. Whatever affects the body also affects the soul.

How does the body limit the spirit?

The human body has limitations specifically certain weaknesses and imperfections. From biological and physical standpoint, it can be recognized that the human body, although it can perform many functions also has limitations. Limits in the environment, demographics, and society may also be human’s limitations.

Mental and emotional disorders (e.g. anxiety, intellectual disabilities) Disabilities (e.g. amputated leg, deafness) Disease and illness (e.g. hypertension and cough) Failures and experience ( e.g . failing a subject) Here are some examples of limitations: PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL LIMITATIONS

Socioeconomic status Location of neighborhood (e.g. armed, disorganized, or violent neighborhood) Abusive relationship (e.g. emotional abuse) Negative influences (e.g. drug use) Here are some examples of limitations: SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITATIONS

How does human nature enable us to surpass our limits? TRANSCENDENCE

The ability to surpass limits is called “ Transcendence”. The word comes from the Latin prefix " TRANS” meaning "beyond," and the word " SCANDARE” , meaning "to climb." When you achieve transcendence, you have gone beyond ordinary limitations. Transcendence

In order for us to achieve transcendence, our MIND plays a very important role. As persons, we are able to exercise our imagination and reflection to go beyond our own thoughts and experiences. But HOW?

The body limits us. Unlike birds that can fly, we have no wings to make us fly. But with creative minds, we Invented jets and planes to make us fly even farther than any bird. Example:

Each individual carries within himself the possibility of transcending his limits by exerting enough effort and perseverance. The essence of transcendence is to acknowledge our limitations , identify possibilities for development and change ourselves for the better.

Direction: On the first column, write your limitations and on the second column, write the corresponding actions on ho w to surpass such limitations. (min 5) ACTIVITY! MY LIMITATIONS PLAN TOWARDS TRANSCENDENCE
