Module 9 LEV VYGOTSKY’S SOCIOCULTURAL THEORY

Learning Outcomes Explain why Vygotsky’s theory is called “Socio-Cultural” Theory Differentiate Piaget and Vygotsky’s view on cognitive development Explain how scaffolding is useful in teaching a skill PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

LEV VYGOTSKY Vygotsky was a prolific writer, publishing six books on psychology in 10 years. His interests were diverse, but often centered on child development, education, the psychology of art, and language development. He developed several important theories about the way children learn and grow within culture and society. He is called “The Mozart of Psychology.” PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

SOCIOCULTURAL THEORY The central theme of Vygotsky’s theory is the role of social interaction in cognitive development. PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

SOCIOCULTURAL THEORY SOCIAL INTERACTION Social environment or the community takes on a major role in one's development. Effective learning happens through social activities. Parents, teachers, and other adults plays a role in the social context of learning. PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

SOCIOCULTURAL THEORY CULTURAL FACTORS Looked into the wide range of experiences that a culture would give to a child. Our cultural view, the way we train children early on in life all contribute to the cognitive development of a child PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

SOCIOCULTURAL THEORY LANGUAGE Language opens the door for learning. Language has an important individual function which Vygotsky called private speech (a form of self-talk that guides the child’s thinking and action). PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

PAIGET vs. VYGOTSKY Piaget’s theory is individualistic PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES Vygotsky's theory gives emphasis on social interactions

PAIGET vs. VYGOTSKY Piaget believes that there is a universal stages of development. PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES Vygotsky did not propose stages of development but focused on cultural factors in cognitive development

PAIGET vs. VYGOTSKY Piaget did not give emphasis on the role of language in cognitive development. PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES Vygotsky stressed the role of language in cognitive development.

ZONE OF PROXIMAL DEVELOPMENT The space between what the learners are able to do independently (zone of actual development) and what the learners can do with assistance from an adult or a more skilled peer (more knowledgeable other or MKO). PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

SCAFFOLDING The support or assistance that lets the child accomplish a task he cannot accomplish independently. PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

EXAMPLES OF SCAFFOLDING When an adult unzips the zipper an inch or two, and then holds the lunch bag so the child can continue to unzip the lunch bag. Loosening the food container lid just a bit and letting the child open the lid himself. Leading the straw and letting the child put the straw through the tetra pack. PEC-FTC 1: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES

When the MKO scaffolds, the process move in four levels: I do, you watch. I do, you help. You do, I help. You do, I watch. Learning will depend in the skill of the MKO, and the learner's readiness and ability to learn and the difficulty of the skill being learned.
