About This Presentation

The turning effect of a force applied to a rotational system at a distance from the axis of rotation. The moment is equal to the magnitude of the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance between its line of action and the axis of rotation.

A moment is the turning effect of a
force. Moments act about a point in a
clockwise or anticlockwise direction.
WHAT IS MOMENTS?
BIOMEHANICS

The turning effect of a force applied to a
rotational system at a distance from the
axis of rotation.

The moment is equal to the magnitude of
the force multiplied by the perpendicular
distance between its line of action and
the axis of rotation.

IT IS A VECTOR

The moment of a force or torque, r is
defined as the turning effect of the force
about a pivot and is the product of the
force (F) and the perpendicular distance
(d) from the line of action of the force to
the pivot.

MOMENT OF FORCE
For example imagine pushing a door open. You
push on the door handle and the door rotates
around its hinges (the hinges are a pivot).

You exerted a force that caused the door to rotate
– the rotation was the result of the moment of
your pushing force.

MOVEMENT OF THE FORCE
A force is any interaction that, when unopposed, will
change the motion of an object.

A force can cause an object with mass to change its
velocity (which includes to begin moving from a state of
rest), i.e., to accelerate.

A force has both magnitude and direction, making it a
vector quantity.

Calcuation of Moment
of Force
Biomechanics

The Moment of a force is a measure of its tendency to
cause a body to rotate about a specific point or axis. ...

The magnitude of the moment of a force acting about
a point or axis is directly proportinoal to the distance
of the force from the point or axis.
