About This Presentation

Presentation about the Moon and its Phases

Slide Content

MOON and other SATELLITES

Synchronous Rotation- the phenomenon where the same side of the moon always faces towards Earth. We always see the same side of the moon.

Phases of the Moon The appearance of the Moon from Earth depends on the relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.

Phases of the Moon NEW MOON The moon is between Earth and the Sun. The side facing away from us is illuminated. The near side is in darkness and we cannot see it at night. the moon is up in the daytime, as it is in the direction of the Sun. It is never visible in the nighttime sky. Day 0-1

Phases of the Moon WAXING CRESCENT MOON Waxing means “growing in size and brilliance.” a sliver of its illuminated half, known as a crescent, becomes visible. the Moon appears to be “filling out” from night to night. During the week that the Moon is in this phase, the Moon is visible east of the Sun. Days 2-6

Phases of the Moon FIRST QUARTER MOON the moon is one-quarter of the way through its orbit. half of the near side of the Moon is in brightness and half is in darkness Day 7

Phases of the Moon WAXING GIBBOUS MOON more than half of the near side is illuminated. Days 8-13

Phases of the Moon FULL MOON The moon is halfway through its cycle. The moon is fully-lit by the Sun, and it is directly across from the Sun with the Earth in the middle. Day 14

Phases of the Moon WANING GIBBOUS MOON waning means “becoming smaller”. The moon is starting to darken again. It is over halfway through its cycle. Days 15-21

Phases of the Moon THIRD QUARTER MOON (Last Quarter) The Moon is now three-fourths, 75%, through its cycle. It is in its “last quarter” before the New Moon repeats. half the near side is in sunlight and half is in darkness. DAY 22

Phases of the Moon WANING CRESCENT MOON The Moon is almost completely dark again. Less and less light is being shown, and the Moon repositions itself between the Earth and the Sun. Days 23-28

Phases of the Moon NEW MOON It’s day 29.5, and the New Moon reappears. The cycle has officially ended and officially begins again.

Phases of the Moon “ONCE IN A BLUE MOON”

Phases of the Moon During the course of a year, it is possible to have 13 Full Moons. In the case of a 13-Full-Moon year, one month has two full moons. When a month has TWO FULL MOONS, the second Full Moon is called the Blue Moon!

Theories about the Origin of the Moon

FISSION THEORY - It suggests that, at one point, the Earth was spinning so fast that part of it spun off to form the moon.

Pacific Ocean might be the site where the would-be moon material came off of Earth. after moon rocks were analyzed , they largely debunked this theory because the moon rock compositions differed from those in the Pacific Ocean. the Pacific Ocean is too young to be the source of the moon. Fission Theory

Also known as the condensation theory. It suggests that both the Earth and the moon formed together while orbiting a black hole. this theory neglects an explanation of why the moon orbits the Earth, nor does it explain the difference in densities between the moon and Earth. Co-accretion Theory
