MOTIVATION

WHAT IS MOTIVATION? It is a driving force within individuals by which they attempt to achieve some goal in order to fulfill some needs or expectation.

Basic model of motivation Needs or expectations Drive force ( behavior or action) Result in To Achieve Desired Goals Which Provides Fulfillment Feedback

Motivation can be divided into two types INTERNAL OR INTRINSIC MOTIVATION EXTERNAL OR EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION

Internal Motivation Internal motivation refers to motivation that is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on any external pressure. It is based on taking pleasure in an activity rather than working towards an external reward.

External Motivation External motivation comes from outside of the individual. Common extrinsic or external motivations are rewards like money and grades, threat of punishment , crowd cheering up etc. Competition is in general extrinsic because it encourages the performer to win and beat others, not simply to enjoy the internal rewards of the activity.

Comparison of internal and external motivation Social psychological research has indicated that external rewards can lead to overjustification and a subsequent reduction in internal motivation. In one study demonstrating this effect, children who expected to be (and were) rewarded with a ribbon and a gold star for drawing pictures spent less time playing with the drawing materials in subsequent observations than children who were assigned to an unexpected reward condition .
