Course: insect morphology topic: chewing and lapping type, siphoning type, mask type and degenerated mouth parts Submitted To: Dr. C. Narendra Reddy Professor Dept . of Entomology Submitted by: K.Prashanth RAM/2015-30

INTRODCTION Chewing and lapping type mouthparts Siphoning type mouthparts Mask type mouthparts Degenerate type mouthparts

chewing and lapping type of mouth parts The labrum and mandibles are biting type. The maxillae, labium and hypopharynx combine together to form a sucking proboscis. The mandibles are dumbell shape. The maxillary palpi are very small or reduced. Labial palpi are conspicuous and 4 segmented. Glossae is provided with long hairs and a small spoon shaped lobe called flabellum or bouton . Glossae is very active while food is being imbibed retracting and protruding from the base of mentum . Eg : Honey bees.

Siphoning type mouthparts These are specially modified for taking nectar from the flowers. The galea of maxilla form into a slender tubular structure which remains as an elongated coiled proboscis underneath head during non feeding. Mandibles are totally absent Labrum and maxilla palpi reduced. Labium modified into small basal plate possessing a three segmented labial palpi .

Siphoning type mouthparts

MASK TYPE MOUTH PARTS: Mainly useful for catching the prey. Labium is modified into a mask where the prementum and post mentum forms into an elongated structure with a joint. Labial palpi are represented as teeth like structure help full for catching the prey. During the resting period when the insect is not feeding, the mouth parts cover a part of the head. Hence it is called as mask type. Eg : Naids of dragonflies.

Degenerate type of mouth parts In apodous maggots a definite head is absent. The mouth parts are highly reduced represented by a mouth hooks or spines. Eg : Maggots of Diptera .
