The movement of the plates creates three types of tectonic boundaries: convergent, where plates move into one another; divergent, where plates move apart; and transform, where plates move sideways in relation to each other. They move at a rate of one to two inches (three to five centimeters) per year. There are three kinds of plate tectonic boundaries: divergent, convergent, and transform plate boundaries. This image shows the three main types of plate boundaries: divergent, convergent, and transform. There are four types of boundaries between tectonic plates that are defined by the movement of the plates: divergent and convergent boundaries, transform fault boundaries, and plate boundary zones. Microplates are smaller fragments of tectonic plates that appear in plate boundary zones.

WHAT ARE PLATES?
9
A tectonic plate is a
massive, irregularly
shaped slab of solid
rock. It is the Earth’s
outermost shell. It
can be divided into
continental and
oceanic plate.

WHAT IS PLATE TECTONICS?
11
It is a theory that
explains the
features and
movement of
Earth's surface in
the present and
the past.

The
motion of
plates
can be
described
in four
patterns:

13
•Convergent plate
boundary occurs when
two plates collide or
move towards each other
and create
compressional forces.
• This can cause the crust
to fold or form reverse
faults and thrust faults

•Subduction zones
occur when one or both
of the tectonic plates
are composed of
oceanic crust. The
denser plate is
subducted underneath
the less dense plate.

•Divergent plate
boundaries occur when
two plates move away
from each other and
creates tensional stress.
The space created will be
filled with new material
from molten magma that
forms below the surface
of the earth.

•Divergent plate boundaries
can form within continents but
may eventually open and
become ocean basins.
•Within continents, this plate
boundary initially produces
rifts or rift valleys. The most
active divergent plate
boundaries are between
oceanic plates which is called
mid-oceanic ridges. This is
also known as underwater
mountain range.

22
•Divergent boundary
forms rift valley and
normal fault.

23
•Transform plate
boundaries are where
plates slide passed each
other and forms shear
stress. The relative
motion is horizontal. It
can occur underwater or
on land.

created the San
Andreas fault

How the movement of plates leads to the formation
of folds and faults?
26
Folds are primarily formed by
compressional forces at
convergent boundaries, causing
the crust to buckle and bend.
Faults are created by shear
stress at transform boundaries,
tensional stress at divergent
boundaries, and compressional
stress at convergent
boundaries, resulting in
fractures and displacements in
the Earth's crust.
