UNIT-1 Information Technology, The Internet and You People – Important Part of IT Example – You (User) Procedure – The rules or guidelines for people to follow when using Software, Hardware and Data are procedures. Software/ Program – It consists of step-by-step instructions that tell the computer how to do its work Data - The raw unprocessed facts i.e., text, pictures, numbers, and sounds are data Hardware – The equipment that processes data to create information is called Hardware. It is controlled by Software. Connectivity/ Internet- Almost all information systems provide a way to connect to other people and computers, typically using the internet. Information System

Software There are Two Types of Software System Software Application Software

System Software

System Software System Software- System software is not a single program. Rather it is a collection of programs including the following Operating System- It is a program that coordinate computer resources, provides an interface between user and the computer and run applications. Ex – Smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices use embedded operating system (real time operating system-RTOS), Desktop and Laptop use stand alone operating system like Windows 7 or Mac OS or Linux and Networks use network operating system (NOS). Utilities- It performs specific tasks related to managing computer resources. Ex- Antivirus Device Drivers- These are Specialized programs designed to allow particular input or output devices to communicate with rest of the computer system. Language Translator – It translates the human language into machine language.

Application Software

Application Software General purpose application- These are widely used in nearly all career areas. They are the kinds of programs you have to know to be considered an efficient and effective end user. Some of the best known are Word Processor, Spreadsheets, P resentation Graphics, Browser, Database Management Systems, etc. Specialized Applications- These include thousands of other programs that are made for performing special tasks for special profession Ex- Tally, Photoshop, Coral Draw, etc. Mobile Applications- A lso known as Mobile Apps are small programs primarily designed for mobile devices like Smartphones, Tablets computers, etc. There are over half a million apps. The most popular mobile apps are for social networking, playing games, and downloading music and videos.

Hardware There are four types of computers- Personal Computers (PCs)- least powerful, widely used fastest growing types. Five types- Desktop, Laptop, Tablets, Smartphones and Wearables . Super Computers- Most powerful, special task ( Ex- forecasting Weather), high capacity, used in very large organizations. Ex- IBM-Blue Gene, CDAC-PARAM, etc. Mainframe Computers- occupy specially wired, air-conditioned rooms, less powerful than Supercomputer. Capable of processing speed Ex- Mainframes are used by insurance companies to process millions of policy holders. Midrange Computers- used as a server in medium size company or department. Powerful than PCs but less powerful than Mainframes

Personal Computer Hardware System Unit Devices Microprocessor controls and manipulates data to produce information Memory is a holding area of data, instruction and information. Ex- RAM, ROM Input / Output Devices- Input- Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Light-pen, touchscreen, etc. Output- Monitor, Printer, Speakers, Plotter, etc. Secondary Storages- Hard disks (Internal/External), CDs, DVDs, Floppies, Pen Drives, etc Communication Devices- Modem, Router, Repeater, etc

Data Data is a raw unprocessed material including text, numbers, images, videos and sounds. Processed data becomes information. Document Files- created by word processors to save documents such as memos, term papers, letters, etc. Worksheet Files- created by electronic spreadsheets to analyse things like budgets and to predict sales. Database Files- typically created by database management program to contain highly structured and organised data, Ex- Employees Database, etc. Presentation Files- created by presentation graphic programs to save presentation material. Ex- Business Presentation.

Connectivity and mobile internet Connectivity is the capability of your personal computer to share information with other computers. Network is a concept of connectivity. The largest network in the world is internet. Along with internet three things are driving the impact of technology on our lives. They are- Cloud Computing- uses the Internet and the web to shift many computer activities from a user’s computer to computer on internet. Users can now use internet to connect to the cloud and access more powerful computers, software and storage. Allows storage to personal and non personal files. Ex Google Drive, Dropbox, We Transfer, etc. Wireless Communication- has changed the way we communicate with one another. The rapid development and widespread use of wireless communication devices like Tablets, Mobiles, Wearable devices has made revolution in communication. The Internet of Things – is the continuing development of the internet that allows everyday objects embedded with electronic devices to send and receive data over the Internet. Ex- Live transmission of CCTV camera footages on Mobile
