HISTORY OF MULA MUTHA RIVER: Flowing since ages, the Mula & Mutha rivers bring with them the riches and the wisdom of the great old Sahayadris to the plains of Maharashtra. Supposed to be as old as the Sahyadri mountains, some 6,00,00,000 years they are older than the Himalayas and the Ganges. They have seen it all from the prehistoric times to the formation of modern cities. Imagined as a royal Maratha queen, the Mutha is a blend of beauty and riches as she flows through the heart of the city. Her composed stance exudes determination and fierceness, reminiscent of the great Maratha period. While the Mula river is imagined as a forest maiden as she curves along the (old) city borders – a little far from the city aspirations . The  Mutha River is a river in western Maharashtra, India. It arises in the Western Ghats and flows eastward until it merges with the  Mula River in the city of Pune. It has been dammed twice, first at the  Panshet  Dam (on the Ambi River), used as a source of drinking water for Pune city and irrigation. The water released here is dammed again at  Khadakwasla  and is an important source of drinking water for Pune. One more dam has been built later on the Mutha river at  Temghar . After merging with the Mula River in Pune, it flows on as the  Mula-Mutha River to join the  Bhima River. In 2014, the Government of Maharashtra announced that the Pune Municipal Corporation would build new Sewage treatment plants to ensure that no sewage would be dumped into the river. METRO LINE ALOG MULA MUTHA RIVER The USP of the project will be state-of-the art carriages and stations that will compete with the best metro stations across the world “It will create beautiful landscapes at most of the vital points through which metro will traverse, People of Pune will especially fall in love with the stretch where metro goes along and across the Mula and Mutha rivers. There will be landscapes and colourful public gardens recreated along the metro path for people to unwind during their leisure hours"

MULA MUTHA RIVER SIDE FURTURE DEVELOPMENT While media reports suggest that the PMC has already prepared a massive river beautification plan that has a budget of more than Rs 2,500 crore , it is the Ahmedabad-based HPC Design, Planning and Management Pvt Ltd that has designed the draft plan for the project . This plan envisages improvement of river banks on both sides of the 44-km stretch passing through the city, including 22.2 km of Mula , 10.4 km of Mutha and 11.8 km stretch of Mula-Mutha river . It also includes footpaths and walkways for walking, cycling, boating facility and setting up eateries. The proposal also includes the development of sewerage network and improvement of treatment capacity to prevent waste dumping into the river. Though there are already 11 working sewage treatment plants in the area, additional plants have been proposed under the plan . While the funding and the development plan still remain undecided upon, the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Plan seems to have tied up in policy paralysis. The wait would be over only when the central government would employ a consultant for feasibility report WHY THE REDEVELOPMENT ALONG THE RIVER SIDE? The prime focus of the development was to improve water quality and stop river pollution. An objective has also been laid out to build surrounding areas as a riverfront for public use. The development plan also includes the building of community toilets in the slum areas which are built on the riverside on the low-lying region as open defecation is one of the major reasons for river pollution.
