MULTIMEDIA DATABASE Guided By Prabhat Pandit Sumit Keshri

What is Multimedia Multi Media Many or more than one. Medium of Communication

Multimedia In Computer,Multimedia means that computer information can be represented through audio, video, and animation in addition to traditional media

What is Database A database is a collection of information organized to provide efficient retrieval. The collected information could be in any number of formats (electronic, printed, graphic, audio, statistical, combinations) A database could be as simple as an alphabetical arrangement of names in an address book or as complex as a database that provides information in a combination of formats. Examples: •phone book •address book

What is Multimedia Database A Multimedia database (MMDB) is a collection of related multimedia data. The multimedia data include one or more primary media data types such as text, images, graphic objects (including drawings, sketches and illustrations) animation sequences, audio and video etc. Multimedia database systems are database systems where, besides text and other discrete data, audio and video information will also be stored, manipulated and retrieved

How does it Differ from standard databases? The difference between Multimedia databases and standard databases is a multimedia database stores information and media ‘internally’ whereas a ‘normal’ database can only store textual or numerical data

Types Of Multimedia Database There are two types of multimedia Database & they are as follows •Linked Multimedia Databases: Multimedia database can be organized as a database of metadata(Data about data). This metadata links to the actual data such as graphic, image, animation, audio, sound etc. These data may be stored on Hard Disc, CD-ROM, DVD or Online. In this database, multimedia elements are organized as image, audio/ MP3, video etc. Advantage of this type of database is that the size of database will be small because elements are not embedded in the database, but only linked to it. •Embedded Multimedia Database: Embedded Multimedia Database implies that the database itself contains the multimedia objects as in the binary form in the database. The main advantage of such kind of database is that retrieval of data will be faster because of the reduced data access time. However, the size of the database will be very large

Data types are categorized into 3 classes • Static media • time-independent • image and graphic object • Dynamic media • time-dependent • Audio, video and animation Dimensional media • 3D game and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) programs.

How data is stored in MMDBMS? The Multimedia data can be stored in 3 parts. They are 1. Raw Data 2. Registering Data 3. Descriptive Data Multimedia data Raw Data ( Uncomprssed Image) Registering Data (Size & coding details of raw data) Descriptive Data (Textual numerical annotations)

Data Structure • Raw Data Unformatted Information Content i.e pixels. • Registering Data Data necessary for interpretation and identification i.e. Format. • Descriptive Data Information about content and structure

Operations on Multimedia Data The operations are 1. Input 2. Output 3. Modification 4. Deletion 5. Comparison 6. Evaluation

Advantages:  They support multiple formats of datas (text, audio, video etc )  Data independence: Separate the database and the management from the application program.  They provide access and authorization control.  Query support :Multimedia databases should have the ability to uniformly Query data (media data, Textual data) represented in different formats and have the ability to simultaneously query different media sources and conduct classical database operations across them Disadvantages:  Usually, the data size of multimedia is large such as video; therefore, multimedia data often require a large storage.  Multimedia database consume a lot of processing time, as well as bandwidth Advantages and Disadvantages of MMDatabase

Application of Multimedia Database: Digital Libraries • Documentation and keeping Records • Knowledge distribution • Education and Training News-on-Demand • Advertisement Video-on-Demand • Entertainment Music database Geographic Information System Marketing Reverse Image searching Web albums Public protection: Real time control and monitoring Medical information system

Conclusion:  Multimedia content becomes more and more popular.  A database is something that holds and organizes data in a way that makes it easy to retrieve and allow a user to search for a particular record.  A multimedia database allows text, data, video, still image, dynamic image and audio to become integral parts of database management- and this is a consequence of information retrieval .

Thank u & Good luck
