Muscles of Lumber Region Origin, Insertion, Nerve supply & Action Abid Hasan Khan

Presented by Abid Hasan Khan Roll no: 30 Year : 2nd Session : 2015-16 Department of Physiotherapy Bangladesh Health Professions Institute (BHPI), CRP- Chapain , Savar , Dhaka – 1343. Abid Hasan Khan

Lumber Muscles Psoas Major Quadretus Lumborum Multifidus Iliocostalis lumborum Intertransversarii laterals Intertransversarii mediales Abid Hasan Khan

Psoas Major Origin:   Superior two-thirds of the internal surface of the iliac fossa, the inner lip of the iliac crest , the ventral surface of the sacroiliac and iliolumbar ligaments, and the upper surface of the lateral part of the sacrum . Insertion:   The lesser trochanter of the femur after being joined by the tendon of psoas major . The conjoined tendon passes under the inguinal ligament to enter the thigh. Abid Hasan Khan

Psoas Major (Cont..) Nerve supply: Femoral nerve (L2, 3 ). Action:   Flexion of thigh at hip, assists in extension of the lumbar spine . Abid Hasan Khan

Quadretus Lumborum Origin: Transverse processes of  L1 – L4, the ilolumbar ligament, posterior third of the iliac crest. Insertion: Inferior border of the 12 th   rib. Nerve supply: Ventral primary rami of T12 – L3. Action:   Lateral flexion of vertebral column; Depression of thoracic rib cage, Elevation of the pelvis. Abid Hasan Khan

Multifidus Origin: Posterior sacrum(next to foramina), superior iliac spine , mamillary process of lumbar vertebrae , transverse process of thoric vertebrae , and articular process of C4-C6 . Insertion: S pinous process of vertebrae ( except c1 ), 2-4 bones above origin. Abid Hasan Khan

Multifidus (Cont..) Nerve Supply: Dorsal rami of spinal nerve. Action: Bilateral action: extend vertebral column. U nilateral action :  laterally flexes and contralatterally rotates vertebral column. Abid Hasan Khan

Iliocostalis lumborum Origin: A nterior surface of a broad and thick tendon which originates from the sacrum, spinous process of the lumbar vertebrae and from the inner lip of the iliac crest. Insertion: Inferior borders of the angles of the lower 6 or 7 ribs. Nerve supply: Dorsal rami of thoracic and lumbar spinal nerves.   Abid Hasan Khan

Iliocostalis lumborum (Cont..) Action: A cting bilaterally, extension and hyperextension of the spine. A cting unilaterally, laterally flexes the spine. Abid Hasan Khan

Intertransversarii laterals Origin: Transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae. Insertion: Accessory process of the next superior lumbar vertebra. Nerve supply: Ventral primary division of spinal nerves. Action: Lateral flexion of vertebral column. Abid Hasan Khan

Intertransversarii mediales Origin: Mammillary process of each lumbar vertebra. Insertion: Accessory process of the next Superior lumbar vertebra. Nerve supply: Dorsal primary division of spinal nerves. Action: Lateral flexion of vertebral column. Abid Hasan Khan

Thank You Abid Hasan Khan
