Often referred to as ‘the cradle of
civilisation’, Iraq was home to the
Sumerians, the world’s oldest-known
civilisation, credited with inventing
writing and creating the world’s first
historical records. For more than
3,000 years, the Sumerians flourished
in the Tigris-Euphrates river valley.
Next came the Babylonians in the
1800s BC, rising to great power in
the region until they were usurped by
the Persians. Over the next several
hundreds of years, the land known
as modern-day Iraq was conquered
by various empires, including Greece,

produced early written languages and literary works and achieving significant
advancements in mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and law. Today, Iraq con-
tinues to play an integral role in the geopolitics of the Middle East."

which ruled until the 1500s when the
Ottomans took control.
After the end of World War I, Britain
took over the Ottoman Empire. In 1932,
Iraq became an independent country
ruled by a constitutional monarchy.
Iraq was declared a republic in 1958,
albeit ruled by a series of dictators, the
last of whom was Saddam Hussein.
Located in West Asia, Iraq was a cen-
tre of innovation and antiquity, having
produced early written languages and
literary works and achieving signifi-
cant advancements in mathematics,
astronomy, philosophy and law. Today,
Iraq continues to play an integral role
in the geopolitics of the Middle East.
