Nail Structure
It is very essential for a manicurist to have knowledge on different
parts of the nail for this will be your basis in giving nail care services
Nail
is the horny translucent plate that protect the tip of the finger and
toes.It is composed mainly of keratin, a protein substance that form
the base of all horny tissue.

Onyx
• Technical term for nails.
Onychology
• Study of nails.

The Nails Consist of 3 parts
•• Nail body or Nail plate
-visible portion of the nail that is attached to the nail bed.
• Free Edge
- End portion of the nail plate which extend beyond the
fingertips. It is shape during manicure.
• Nail root
- Beginning of the nail found at the base and is embedded
underneath the skin.

Structures Beneath Nails
Nail Bed
The skin upon which the nail body/nail plate rest.
Matrix
• Part of the nail bed which contains nerves and
blood vessels and is located beneath the nail root
Lunula
Half moon shape found at the base of the nail
where the matrix connect with the nail bed.

Structures Surrounding the Nails

Nail Disorders
conditon caused by injury to the nails,
diseases or imbalances of the body.

BLUISH NAILS
Appear blue in color
which reveals that body
is not getting enough
oxygen
This also indicates
infection in lungs, such
as pneumonia.
It is recommended to
see physician but also
can given manicure
with care and light
pressure
BRUISED NAILS
The results of trauma
to the nail plate. This
causes injury to nail,
blood becomes trapped
under the nail.
This can be treated by
not applying pressure
on nail plate

CORRUGATION
Wavy ridges caused
by uneven growth of
the nails
It is recommended to
buff the nails carefully
to help remove or
minimize ridges.
HANGED NAILS
Split cuticle;loose skin
separate from the
cuticle
This may be trimmed
with cuticle, nipper,
moisturizer, and apply
cuticle oil.

Koilonychia/
Spoon Nails
Nails with concave
shape usually cause
through iron
difficiency.
It is recommended to
file nails carefully with
no pressure and use
nail polish to harden
and protect nail.
Leuconychia
White spots appear on
the nail, but do not
indicate nail diseases.
These white spots
eventually disappear
The white spot on the
fingernail will
gradually diminish
after taking zinc in
daily food.

Onychorrhexis/
Split brittle
Nails
Caused by injury to the
finger, improper filing
or exposure to harsh
chemicals.
It is recommended to
soften the nails before
trimming and use daily
moisturizer/oil
manicure.
Omychauxis
An overgrowth of nail,
usually in thickness
rather than length
caused by a local
infection and can be
also heredity.
File the nail smooth
and buff with pumice
powder

Onychatrophia
An atrophy or wasting
away of the nail plate
Which causes it to lose
it's luster becomes
smaller and sometimes
shed entirely
File the nail smooth
with the fine side of the
Emery board.
Onychophagy/
bitten nails
Caused by nervous
habit and stress
related. It is a sign of
persistent anxiety
It is recommended that
the client recieve
frequent manicure.

Onychogryposis
A condition which the
nail curvature is
increase and enlarged.
Apply moisturizing
cream on the nails
every time you wash
your hands or feet.
Onycholysis
A loosening of the nail
caused by internal
disorder, infection or
drug treatment
It is recommended to
keep nail short and
avoid nail polish.

Onychomycosis
Also known as tinea
unguium or ringworm
of the nail is an
infectious diseases
caused by fungus
Advisable to keep nail
dry and clean, use anti
fungal foot spray
Onychoptosis
A shedding of one or
more nail either in
whole or part
Always wear properly
fitted foot wear that
offers your toes lot of
space and dry nails
thoroughly.

Paronychia
It is an inflammation
of the skin around the
nail caused by bacteria
Always keep yung
hands and feet dry and
clean, wear rubber
gloves with an
absorbent cotton
