Narcotic drug: A drug means cocoa leaf Cannabis Opium etc and synthetic drugs from them . Psychotropic substance: A substance which alters mental functions. LSD Amphetamine Barbiturates tranquilizers

Narcotic = a sleep inducing agent. Legally a narcotic drug An opiate(a true narcotic) Cannabis (a non-narcotic) Cocaine(the very antithesis of narcotic, it’s a stimulant)

THE ACT Act of 61 of 1985 Amends the existing laws relating to narcotic drugs, Strengthens existing control over drug abuse. Also provisions for purpose of preventing & combating trafficking, abuse of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. In India act was amended in 1988.

The Narcotic drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act NDPS act 1985 This act repeals and renders the three previous acts: The opium act 1857 Opium act 1878 The Dangerous Act 1930 All the above 3acts are been removed and included in NDPS act of 1985

OBJECTIVE OF THE ACT The NDPS act imposes complete prohibition on Cultivation Manufacturing Possession Sale Purchase Transport -import-export of such drugs like coca, poppy, cannabis. Except for medical or scientific purposes.

The Central Govt of India constituted Narcotics control Bureau in 1986 HEADQUATERS in NEW DELHI
