Open with a series question A question that inspires curiosity, but that can be simply answered (but it should be addressed in your essay). Example: "What does it mean to be happy?"

Open with an announcement Open with an announcement about what is to come. However, do not insult the reader by saying something like, “I am going to tell you about …” Example: I never cried when my grandmother died. I hadn’t been allowed to attend the funeral; my mother thought I was too young. I guess that is why I felt so sad the morning it happened.

Open with a bold and challenging statement A statement or assertion that arouses an opinion or response from your reader. Example: "You'll soon be able to upload your dreams to Youtube."

Open with a quotation from somebody A quote from a famous person that is relevant to your work. Example: "Ghandi famously said, 'Be the change you wish you see in the world. '"

Open with a puzzle To raise questions that puzzle the reader Example: I’m never really sure if it’s a real memory or just something that’s become more solid over time. But I’m sure that my brother once tried to murder me.

Open with a personal experience A short story about an experience in your life that is relevant to the writing topic Example: “ As a child I was deathly afraid of water, so naturally I joined the swim team

Open with a background information is important if the reader needs to know certain facts before the thesis makes sense Example: “opportunities for learning is an independent study school that many students choose if the traditional school is not working for them”
