Anatomy

Steps in Nasopharyngeal Swab Put the patient in a safe area for collecting sample preferably, negative pressured room or room with Hepa filter. Minimum persons are allowed inside the room during specimen collection.

Steps in Nasopharyngeal Swab Prepare all the materials needed. Complete airborne PPE (N95 according to Fit test) Viral Transport Media Set properly labeled with patients details. Request form, filled up by the requesting physician. Biohazard Bag Scissor (optional)

Steps in Nasopharyngeal Swab Tilt patient’s head back 70 degrees

Steps in Nasopharyngeal Swab Insert swab into nostril. (swab should reach depth equal to the distance from nostrils to outer opening of the ear.) Leave swab in place for several seconds to absorb secretions.

Steps in Nasopharyngeal Swab Slowly remove swab while rotating it. (swab both nostrils with same swab.)

Steps in Nasopharyngeal Swab Place the tip of swab into the sterile viral transport media tube and snap/cut off the applicator stick.

Steps in Nasopharyngeal Swab Place the specimen in Biohazard plastic and send immediately to laboratory, along with fully filled up request form.

Steps in Nasopharyngeal Swab Staff nurses must take the sample from outside Isolation room (Ante-Room) and brought immediately to Laboratory.
