PROBLEM STATEMENT The global prevalence of refractive errors has been estimated upto 2.3 billion.China has the highest prevalence of myopia rates in world. 400 million of it’s 1.3billion people are myopic (http://news xinhuanet.com) Allergic Rhinitis affects an estimated 20 to 40 million people in the United States alone, and the incidence is increasing; an estimated 20% of cases are Severe Allergic Rhinitis; 40% of cases are perennial rhinitis; and 40% of cases are mixed. ANSWER IN AYURVEDA Ayurveda emphasizes on health promotion of an individual with the help of various regimens like Dinacharya (daily regimen), Nishacharya (night regimen), Ritucharya (seasonal regimen). Among them Dinacarya (daily regimen) is very important to prolong the life span .
NASYA “ औषधमौषधसिद्धो वा स्नेहो नासिकाभ्यां दीयत इति नस्यम् | ” ( Su. Chi. 40/21) Nasya is one among the Panchakarma procedures, where medicine is administered through nose. The medication can be oil, ghee, juice, milk or powder . Pratimarsha is very easy as it is easy process, can be done quickly and having many benefits. Pratimarsha nasya can be applied from birth till death.
DRAVYA FOR PRATIMARSHA NASYA Oil alone can be used for Pratimarsha Nasya to be practiced daily, as the head is seat for Kapha. Nothing is better than oil to produce lubrication. A . S. Sū . 29/22, Ś. S. U Kha . 8/3
METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION OF NASYA Lie down in supine position with head and neck low position; instill 2 drops of oil in each nostril. Pinch the nose once and after releasing, suck the oil up. Spit the oil when it reaches the throat. In sitting or standing posture, dip the distal part of your little finger in oil and insert into one nostril while other is closed (pinched), insufflate the oil up while little finger is in nostril. Repeat the same for other nostril. Spit the oil when it reaches the throat.
Poorva karma Pass all the urges- urinate, defecate Brush the teeth first if doing in the early morning Gentle massage over the entire face and neck with sesame oil Avoid eye lids and eyes during massage Svedana karma – vapor inhalation, exposure to sunlight, gentle exercise, luke warm water
Pradhan karma Lie on a cot in a room devoid of breeze or excess sunlight Head should be slightly tilted back Instill oil in the nostrils (2 drops in each ) Massage sole, neck, palms, ears Inspire though the nose and spit out the excess oil in the throat and mouth .
Paschat karma Dhumapana or kavala / gandusa with luke warm water .
DOSE The dose of Pratimarsha nasya is 2 drops or even one drop in each nostril, by which Doshas are vitiated to lesser extent, do not undergo further increase. A drop is the quantity of oil which drops from the index finger dipped into the oil to the first two phalanges.
