NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

(NMHP) is in operation in India since 1982 . This was initiated primarily to tackle the problem of huge burden of mental disorders in India.

Mile Stones 1996 - The district mental health program was added to the program. 2003- The Program was re-strategized and two new schemes were included: (1) modernization of state mental hospitals and (2) Upgradation of psychiatric wings of medical colleges/general hospitals. 2009 -The manpower development scheme (Scheme-A and B) was included as the part of the program.

Objectives To ensure the availability and accessibility of minimum mental health care for all in the foreseeable future. To encourage the application of mental health knowledge in general health care and in social development To promote community participation in the mental health service development and enhance human resource in mental health sub-specialties.

Components District mental health program (DMHP ): Currently, DMHP is functioning in 241 districts and is proposed to expand it to all districts in a phased manner. Mental health services (in and outpatient) are provided in hospitals with 10 inpatient capacity Staffing: . It includes psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, psychiatric nurse, psychiatric social worker, community nurse, monitoring and evaluation officer, case registry assistant and ward assistant/orderly

Out-Reach Services Four satellite clinics conducted at CHCs/PHCs The target interventions are life skills education and counseling in schools and colleges, stress management and services on suicide prevention Training of health personnel Conduct awareness camps. Encouraging community participation by linking with self-help groups, family and caregiver and NGOs of mental health Sensitization of enforcement officials regarding legal provisions

Day Care Center This is basically to provide rehabilitation and recovery services to persons with mental illness.

Manochaitanya (Super Tuesday clinic) Programme is a unique initiative of Govt. of Karnataka. Under this programme , on selected Tuesdays Psychiatrist from DMHP/DH/Medical college/Private, provide specialist Services to the mentally ill at the Taluka level hospitals. Currently these are functional in 146 Taluks of the State.

Residential/Long-term Continuing Care Center Chronically mentally ill individuals, whose symptoms are stable but unable to return to their families and are currently the residents of the mental hospitals, will be placed in these centers.

Mental Health Care at Community Health Centers Outpatient and inpatient services to all emergency psychiatry patients. Counseling services to all. Staffing The CHC staffed with one medical officer and clinical psychologist or psychiatric social worker.

At Primary Health Centers Outpatient services available Counseling services active case findings and mental health promotion activities. Staffing Staffed with two community health workers.

Mental Health Services at Medical Colleges/Teaching Hospitals These services are provided under the overall supervision of the head of psychiatry department Each of such facility receives the financial support of 15.00 lakhs per year.
