GSD Meetup presentation (10/10/2024):
In a world omnipresently shaped by digital technologies, web design and web development face the challenge of being not only aesthetically pleasing and functional, but also human- and environment-centered. This talk explores the little-researched connection between mental health and sustainable web design - also from the developer's perspective. We will discuss how thoughtful design principles and practices can reduce users' mental stress while making a positive contribution to the environment. Strategies and best practices will be presented that aim to make websites more accessible, user-friendly and at the same time more environmentally friendly in order to improve the online experience and promote mental health. The 30-minute presentation will encourage participants to think about people and the environment in the context of the web design and web development trades and to develop innovative solutions that prioritize user well-being and sustainability.

The world isn’t broken .
It’s working exactly as it was designed to
work! And we’re the ones who designed it.
Which means we fucked up .

Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes
their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can
work productively, and is able to make a contribution to their
community.
— World Health Organization (WHO)

Any TV, any LCD, any iPhone, any iPad — something like that — if you
just stare at it, it looks like a black mirror, and there’s something cold
and horrifying about that, and it was such a fitting title for the show .

We’re no longer pushing pixels around a screen.
We’re building complex systems that touch people’s
lives, destroy their personal relationships, broadcast
words of both support and hate, and undeniably
mess with their mental health .
