INTRODUCTION Maternal health is the health of women during, pre-pregnancy , pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Maternal health is important to reduce the rate of Infertility, High risk pregnancies, Maternal mortality, Intra Uterine Growth Retardation(IUGR), Post Partum Hemorrhage(PPH), Premature & preterm deliveries, ensuring Post partum health.

Child health refers to the physical, mental, social wellbeing of children from infancy through Adolescence.

SCRIPTURAL REVIEW BHAGWADGITA अन्नमशितं त्रेधा विधीयते तस्य यः स्थविष्ठो धातुस्तत्पुरीषं भवति यो मध्यमस्तन्मांसं योऽणिष्ठस्तन्मनः || 6.5.1 || Meaning : When we eat food, it divides itself into three parts. The grossest part of it becomes excreta; that which is less gross becomes our flesh; and the finest part becomes our mind. CHANDOGYA UPANISHAD आयुःसत्त्वबलारोग्यसुखप्रीतिविवर्धनाः। रस्याः स्निग्धाः स्थिरा हृद्या आहाराः सात्त्विकप्रियाः।।17.8।। Meaning : The foods that prolong life and increase purity, vigor, health, cheerfulness and happiness are those that are delicious, soothing, substantial and agreeable. These are loved by the Pure.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

What is NATUROPATHY ? It is a Holistic healthcare approach with non-invasive procedures viz using five great elements (Panchamahabhutas)– Air, Water, Fire, Earth, Space It helps in supporting the body’s self healing abilities, emphasizing prevention and treating underlying causes of illness.

NATUROPATHIC UNDERSTANDING

NATUROPATHIC DIET The Naturopathic diet has been renowned since Vedic era( Atharva Veda, 3500 YA) for treating ailments and diseases. It emphasizes natural, whole, unprocessed foods that are believed to support the body’s ability to heal and maintain itself. Avoiding processed foods, artificial ingredients, excessive sugars, and unhealthy fats.

RAW DIET CONSTRUCTIVE DIET SOOTHENING DIET ELIMINATIVE DIET It includes foods in its natural form such as raw fruits and vegetables. They are considered ideal for a diet receptive to healing due to its nourishing properties full of vital Vitamins and Minerals while low in calories and other toxic agents. It consists of fresh and dry fruits, vegetables, nuts, sprouts and other legumes. The nourishing dietary elements with detoxification attributes that cater to cleansing of our system. With its eliminative properties, this type of food activates our eliminative organs such as intestines and kidneys. It includes foods such as citric juices, lemon water, tender coconut water, thin butter milk. Soothening diet is slightly more filling and preferred during recovery from diseased condition. Food items in this diet include boiled vegetables, vegetable soups, butter milk, semi-solid alkaline porridges. This diet allows in building new healthy cells and increase immunity. Consists of food prepared from cereals, wholegrains, unpolished rice, pulses, sprouts, curd, millets, nuts.

ANTENATAL DIET

First Trimester : Morning sickness : Foods rich in vitamin B6 ( Potatoes, wheat, banana, soya bean) Nausea, Vomiting : Ginger decoction, cold water sipping Low Backache : Milk, Milk products, soya bean, till, green leafy vegetables, ragi preparations Anaemia and neural tube defects : Folate rich Foods ( Orange, pomegranate, spinach, beetroot, ragi, black eyed peas, sprouts, pulses)

Second Trimester : Fetal Brain development : Omega 3 fatty acids (ghee) For Bone strength : leafy vegetables, milk, till, ragi preparations Cell protection and tissue repair : Sprouts, Millets, Leafy vegetables rich in anti-oxidants Constipation : Whole grain preparations, fiber rich fruits and vegetables, plenty of water Pedal edema : Barley water with honey (under supervision)

Third Trimester : Constipation : Ghee, rice, milk, green gram, jaggery preparations Vitamin and mineral deficiency : Seasonal fruits Leg cramps : Take the foods rich in magnesium ,sodium like Green leafy vegetable, Palak, Amaranthus, chukkakura , bachhalikura , moringa, black eyed beans, Horse gram, beans curry in diet regularly . Heart burn :Fruits like banana, Musk melon, water melon, coconut water, Butter milk, cold milk can be taken frequently. FOODS TO AVOIDED: Reduce consumption of citrus fruits and sour foods.Avoid spicy foods &hot served foods.

POSTNATAL DIET PUERPERIUM : Placental delivery to 40-42 days post delivery. Diet Immediately after Delivery : Liquid diet for the first 6 to 7 hours.

Diet up to 7 days after Delivery : Soothening Diet – Rice, Ragi, Sago, Wheat Semolina (Ravva), Ghee. Morning - Idly with Ghee and Garlic Powder, Pulka and Upma 11’o clock - Ragi porridge with Jaggery, Pulka, Upma Afternoon - Tenderly Boiled rice with Leafy Vegetables like Spinach/Fenugreek/Morringa leaves and Dal. Evening and Night - 3 Glasses of milk. Use Sonti and Ghee for indigestion on empty stomach. A glass of Turmeric water to prevent infections and Blood clots. Note : Ghee intake would relieve Constipation and avoid salts.

Diet up to 6 weeks after Delivery : Morning - Kichidi with Green gram, Idly, Ragi Dosa, Upma with Broken rice. Afternoon – Rice with Dal, Sonti, Leafy Vegetables, Soup with Pepper Night – Easily Digestible foods(gourds), Leafy Vegetables, Chapati/Pulka, Fruits and fruit juices, Dry dates, Raisins, Dried Fig (can be soaked overnight) Foods to be Avoided : Junk food, Oily food, Bakery food, Tobacco, Toddy

Importance of Breastfeeding for Child Health It contains optimal amount of nutrients that a new born needs. Aids in building immunity and prevents infections. Maintains stabilized blood sugar levels in new born. As baby grows breast milk changes to meet baby’s needs. At birth (Colostrum) 6 weeks 3 months 6 months 12 months 24 months (Concentrated and similar to colostrum) Immunity, Gut protection Highest concentration of anti-bodies Full of calories Rich in Omega acids for brain development Rich in calories and Omega acids for muscles and brain development To boost immunity

SEROTONIN : Enteroendocrine cells in the gut produce the neurotransmitter serotonin, which may have an effect on mood signaling in the brain. IMMUNE SYSTEM CYTOKINES : The intestinal microbiome can prompt Immune cells to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines that can induce depression and anxiety. VAGUS NERVE : Vagal tone-how strong it is can affect emotional regulation, depression and even act as a measure of a person's sensitivity to stress. BACTERIAL MOLECULES : Microbes produce metabolites such as butyrate, SCFAs, GABA and tryptophan which travel to the brain via blood vessels and regulate neurological function.
